Here is the link to the Mauser 66 operating manual https://www.mauser.com/fileadmin/user_upload/pdf/manuals/Modell_66.pdf ,note that barrels are only interchangeable within specific groups of calibers.
New barrels can be sourced from the following companies in Germany http://www.henneberger.de/mauser-66.html ,
http://www.otto-repa.de/leistungen/wechsllaeufe.html , http://www.keidler-waffen.de/mauser-66/ as well as probably from many other providers.

owners obviously love their old Mauser 66's.

Interesting.

I thought the 9.3x64 also fitted the same bolt head as the 8x68S?

The 10.75x68 also has a different bolt head but per the table does fit the same as 8x68S. I thought that one didn't?

I also thought it was a common misconception that the 2 are the same case to start. But i'd say youre right, it shouldnt?

That page also lists 416 Rigby, which is way bigger than the rest listed.

Wonder what the shotgun is..?

Shotgun barrels for the Mauser 66?

The German text refers to a "Flintenabzug", or "shotgun style trigger". which is merely the German expression for a single stage trigger. Also the "side locks" is a mistranslation of the German term for bolt stop on the side of the receiver, as shown in the photo. Early Mauser 66's had the bolt stop on the other side and could not be operated manually, if I remember correctly.

So much for Google.

I wonder why they chose the 7X66 SE vom Hofe, when its performance is virtually the same as that of the 7mm Remington Magnum and ammunition and components for it are much cheaper and more readily available.

I have a Bockbuechsflints in 16-70/7X75R SE vom Hofe, with again virtually the same performance as the other two, but the reason for choosing it is obviously the rimmed case, more suitable for such a combination gun.

I also have a Mauser 66 in 7mm Remington Magnum which I have not yet wrung out.

Why not? I would love to have a 7mm SE vom Hofe. Something different and exotic sounding.

One of the M66 modern barrel markers list both the 7 mm Rem Mag and the 7 mm SE vom Hofe, so pick the one you want. However if you have a Mauser 66 for the bolt class that takes the 8x68S and 6.5x68, ONLY the SE vom Hofe barrel choice will work.

I got one in 8x68S.
Superb rifle in outstanding caliber.
The only limit is the weight... not suitable for stalking, the best gun i have if hunting from a turret.

The 7x66 VH is really like the new .28Nosler. I think Nosler has copied VH design(and case).

I just got a Mauser 66 Stutzen in 30-06 for my birthday: Its in like-new condition, an early one made July, 1968.
38 in. long, 21" barrel, weighs 6.75 lb. I'd like to find more information on the Mauser 66...including specific info. on barrel swaps between early and later production, scope mounting systems, etc. I've read what there is in Speed's Oberndorf Sporters book and in Olson's Mauser book....and I found a German website for "Mauser 66 Fans" which can be translated, but I have had no luck in joining the group: (https://forum.wildundhund.de/showthread.php?21772-Mauser-66-(S)-Fan-Club)

What I would like to find or have made is a 9.3x62 barrel for this rifle. But I understand there is a difference between early stocks (pre-1970?) and later stocks (and therefore barrel fitting).Does anyone know this information? Does anyone know a barrel source?

The early ones have a square flange under the barrel, but this was later found unnecessary. I'm told it can be removed by sweating it off but I do not know this for sure. Also, it might be possible to modify the bedding of the later rifles to fit the early barrels. However the bedding is steel and looks like an engine big-end bearing, so I wouldn't assume the stock could easily be modified either, to make a recess for this flange just in front of this bedding shell.

Beware too, that some have a barrel ring for the front swivel. Others have a swivel in the fore-end. So if you get the wrong barrel, you might have 2 different systems on one rifle or not be able to carry it afield without doing some modification.

7x66 SEvH is a great calibre, but getting the cases can be problematic. Mine puts it's shots in a cloverleaf at 100 yards. I don't ask for more than that. If anyone is considering modifying .404 cases to make 7x66 SEvH, I suggest you price the conversion dies first. They might cost as much as the rifle, (albeit, not as much as the Koelner Jagdhuette rifle shown). And you'll still have to use a mini-lathe to reform the extractor groove.

The 8x68S Mauser 66 was actually very popular for overseas hunts. A flat shooting powerful cartridge combined with a telescoping action and a barrel-band front swivel meant a compact rifle to carry, much shorter and about a pound lighter than say a .375 H&H. In theory the 8x68S barrel can be fitted to a standard stock, but the bullets need to be seated deeper to work them through a standard action. This is according to Australian arms authority Nick Harvey who reviewed one. I have not tried it with mine. The 8x68S was reworked with shorter bullets by RWS to work through a standard (i.e. .30-06 sized), action and the RWS KS bullet was pretty revolutionary at the time, which added to this combinations popularity in the Mauser 66. The Mauser 66 was the first of the new-generation "switch-barrel" guns, now seen in a variety of other makes such as Blaser R93.

There are a few barrel makers in Germany who could do you a barrel or two.

One is located in Oberndorf called Otto Repa.
http://www.otto-repa.de/leistungen/service-fuer-mauser-waffen.html

BTW.Congratulation with that M66. Lovely rifle. I too would like to have a Stutzen(full stocked) m66 one day.

Rpeck, please PM me an email address where I can send you M66 related .Pdf documents as I don't know how to post them on the Forum. With regards to adding a 9,3x62 barrel to your 270 existing one, this should be possible as both calibers belong to the same group of exchangeable barrels for Mauser 66. With regards to ordering a new barrel, please see websites in Germany in my post on top of this thread. On the subject of scope mounts, my two M66 (7x64 & 8x68S) are fitted with claw mounts - which is quite the norm in Europe for quality rifles, but I saw on your photos that your M66 is already drilled so you may decide on other types of scope mounts. Re: Mauser 66 [Re: Louis]

Mauser 66 seems to be a slightly difficult rifle to scope. Most mounting solutions (like EAW)are expensive, heavy, complex and mount the scope much too high for me. I like low power hunting scopes mounted as low as possible.

So I just used what I had on hand: My (provisional?) solution was to use Talley rings that just coincidentally fit the Mauser's barrel dovetail base, and I used an original factory tapped hole on the base to mount a screw as a recoil stop. There are no permanent changes to the rifle at all, and the very light (7.5 oz.) and the bright intermediate eye relief 2.5X28 Leupold "Scout" scope is mounted very low...lower than any scope mounted on a normal bolt action rifle, because on the M-66 this scope is now mounted slightly below the "receiver ring" (actually part of the barrel). Perfect for quickly getting on target. Its actually pretty solid, and so far so good...no slipping on the dovetail. It might not work for a magnum, but it seems to hold up on the 30-06. The scope and mounts only add 9 ounces, so the carbine remains light and compact and carries well in one hand.

I've always thought the 7m Von Hoff was a renamed .280 Ross, nothing more nor less.
