Correct weight for a 375 H&H takedown sporter.

Ok, I'm having Joe Smithson build me a lightish, trimmer 375 H&H takedown on a small ring GMA action.

It will be have a 22 inch sporter counter SS match barrel with front sight base, rear sight bases and sling swivel integral to the barrel. Carbon fiber stock and cerecoat finish. It will most likely have a blind magazine to keep weight down. It will have his 30mm DT rings and bases. I already have a Swarofski 1-8x24 8i scope for it.

I'm thinking of targettting 8 lbs, is that a reasonable weight for a stalking 375? Can I go lighter? I'm 6.4 feet tall and 240 lbs but I don't handle recoiling as well as some. I can't shoot the 378 or 460 weatherby at all.

Any thoughts on weight or something I'm missing or doing wrong?

The correct weight to handle a .375H&H comfortably would be in the 180- 240lb range depending on your age and physical condition. Just kidding. Recoil is very subjective.From the bench, with only one hand on the grip and the other tucked under the butt, the .375 gets annoying after half a box. Shooting from a sitting or standing position, it's literally a blast to shoot. When shooting at game it's no worse than an .06. The thing to watch out for is eye relief if you use a scope. Make sure to buy a scope with plenty of ER and keep your face as far back as possible before you squeeze that trigger.

The lightest I have shot was an early model Blaser with scope and ammo at 6 1/4 lbs ... snappy recoil ...

It may not be too bad as long as you aren't shooting from the bench. I have a Ruger #1 around that weight in a custom cartridge that sits between the .458WM and .458Lott, it's kind of snappy. Have you seen the new Trijicon Accupower 1-8x? I know you have a Swarovski but these look really good.

As and aside, I thought GMA closed up a few years about?

If Joe can keep it down around 8 1/2 pounds, which was the weight of most original H&H rifles, you will have a fantastic rifle.

Just weighed my .375/06IMP, with 3-9X Burris scope w/Leather sling - 9 pounds 8 ounces - it's perfect - for me.

My takedown H&H 375 Belted Mag was delivered in 1913 and weighed 8lbs 2oz.

Yours will be great! As long as it fits you and is well balanced, much more important than weight.

I have handled 375's 2 lbs heavier that kicked the snot out of me! Mine is a pussycat, even with a hard butt plate.
