1903 blonde Mannlicher
      #295217 - 14/02/17 05:05 AM

My little carbine was proofed in 1921. It is a takedown with the pop up tang sight and butt plate compartment with cleaning rod. It has the lightest colored stock I have seen, looks like maple to my eye. The stock is original, numbered to the gun, but the forend tip was missing so a horn tip was fitted. Just curious to know if any of you have seen a blonde stock like this one.

Can we have more photos of the tang site? I suspect that it is not a site but a diopter to sharpen the focus on the front and rear sites.

Two of my pre-WW2 Mannlicher – Schoenauers have fairly blonde stocks too.
M1924 in .30-06

M1925 in 8x60 Magnum/S

Nice - looks like walnut to me. One thing is the pores are to large for maple, in my opinion.

All 3 stocks are European Walnut, tree species juglans regia. This Wood is usually much lighter in color than American Black walnut, juglans nigra. Quite often European gunstocks are stained darker before finishing. On the other hand, regia Wood has less and smaller pores than nigra and often shows contrasting light-dark coloration, up to "marble cake" appearance. Black/nigra Wood is usually of an uniform, dark reddish brown color.

This one, an early form of a Mauser shotgun, also has a lightly coloured stock.

An old post, I know, but here's a couple of images from that ol' 1939 Stoeger. Notice among the cost- options was "stock of specially selected pretty wood... $20.00".

That was among the more expensive options, the "special folding peep sight" being an extra $12.00. The Takedown Model option added $15.00 more:

The peep sight:

There should be no 'forend tip', as far as I know, unless that's the "horn cap at the muzzle of sporter type" option offered for $8 extra. One would think "at the muzzle" would indicate a Stutzen, but this image of the 'High Velocity' (M1925) is identified as a "sporter half stock":

I have seen original beechwood stocks on early pre-war M1903 Take Downs. The ones I saw were fancy fiddle back and had been stained a lovely dark reddish brown color. Perhaps yours is a beech non-stained stock.

Beechwood is very easy to identify and I have never seen any Mannlicher factory stock made from that wood. Husqvarna used to have beechwood stocks in some models. Here is one good example: https://www.simpsonltd.com/products/z35585
