DORLEAC 30-06 "Plains Game" Mauser & ZEISS V8 scope
      #295200 - 13/02/17 07:31 PM

On a classic rifle it is often difficult to mount such an imposing scope as the excellent ZEISS V8.
On this 30-06, made for a Continental hunter, we opted for the solution of an offset front claw mount combined with the rear sight base.
Of course the action is an Original Mauser born in Oberndorf in the late 1930s, the walnut is French and the discreet ornamentation from the talented hands of Florent Viale.

Regards to all.

Lovely rifle. I don't care for that huge scope.

Beautiful rifle, beautifully made and one day when the stars get aligned correctly I hope be knocking on M. Dorleac's door to have the same rifle built

But it will have a nice simple and elegant Swarvoski z3 in 3-10x42 or 3-9x36 with the 1" tube would look so much nicer and do everything that's needed. And if needed for driven shooting I would add 1-4x20 scope designed for the job with the 36m at 100m field of view, rather than the more limited 25m of the v8 with 50mm objective.

And M. Dorleac would need to find a true left handed Mauser action to build it on.

Yes, a dream rifle for sure but like some others I'd prefer a less imposing scope (actually, no scope at all. Just a nice little Rigby-style peep sight would do for 'moi')

Hmmmm ... note how effortlessly I transition into 'the French' .....

Beautiful rifle and exquisite workmanship, but I haven't seen a rifle-scope combination so out of proportion since the Starlight scope we used in Vietnam:

The rifle impeccable as always,
but the scope has the charm of a german hand grenade.
I have no problem to choose a modern scope even on a "classic rifle ". Usability first.
The Zeiss V8 series of scopes with the 36mm tube diameter maybe interesting for tactical rifles.
On a hunting rifle it seems to me extremely displaced.
There are times when a riflemaker should beware a customer from such a mismatched combo.

Lovely classically beautiful rifle as always by Dorleac.

I don't understand the modern need for large magnification scioes on hunting rifles. Especially on a .30-06. But if I had the need for an extra large magnification of more than 6x on a medium or larger game rifle, I would go for two scopes.

On rifles for small game it is useful for a 8x or so scope.

On longer range rifles perhaps too.

That rifle deserves something slimmer and smaller but the client decides!

Gentlemen,

Don't forget that our job is to satisfy the requirements of our customers.
Obviously when we are confronted with this kind of request we try to answer at best, both technically and aesthetically.
Finally, the demands of a Continental hunter who hunts at the darkest moments of the day, before dawn and after dusk, are not the same as those of an American or Australian user ... or those of a mountain hunter like me!
Lastly, to give reason to several remarks, the Swarovski Z3 is my preferred scope although here the majority of customers want the new Z8i…and as it is the one who pays who chooses, it is difficult to impose my personal choice !

No one is criticizing the gun maker, who has to yield to the wishes of his clientele, however perverted, but the taste of the customer is not immune to criticism. I just hate to see such beauty in design and execution marred by lack of taste. The person who would order such a combination of rifle and scope would no doubt put a roof rack on his Ferrari and use it to transport his spare tire and gas can, Utilitarian, but hardly aesthetic.

As I looked over the pictures & engraving a word came into my mind and Waidmannsheil used my own words, as I scrolled down through the comments to this box "very nice tasteful engraving".

Well done, Sir!

For my tastes as well, the scope is a bit much - however, the rifle itself is nigh on perfect!

Yes its the client that has the last say, might prefer to do a spot of very early morning shooting in mind when the light is rather dim.
Could easily have a 2nd scope set for normal daytime use as well.
Beautiful work as always mate!

Nothing wrong with the rifle at all. Beautiful as always.

As I said, regarding the scope, the client decides in the end.

Some hunters shooting from hochsitz by moonlight might stick on their rifle a light intensification device with a small monitor screen beside the scope for actual aiming ... now that is unweildly, but all they do is sit and shoot from a box or a tower. All a bit different.

Superlative work! Up there with the finest in the world. The selection of an Oberndorf rather than the CNC modern versions adds another dimension. The scope is disproportionate, function over form, I would have ordered a scope without the rail and used a rear ring. Another excuse to add the tasteful engraving. The lines and the execution are truly spectacular.Thank you for posting these pics.

It would be very nice to see if somebody here could show me a scope which looks so good and has same abilities with light as ZEISS V8 or Swarovski Z3 has. The reason for using these scopes is very clear; the biggest deer with biggest horn comes allways so late in the evening that you just need all light what yours scope could catch. In autumn deer season, before the snow has come, dark is very steep and comes very early.

Beautiful rifle!!! For a great cartridge!!!
Agree with Wanabebwana and Igorrock...function over form. Anyway, I also see the Zeiss V8 as a scope too big for this fantastic rifle, even for hunting in the dark. The Victory Diavari iluminated, as example, would be, TO ME, more than enough...But the V8 is the CUSTOMER CHOICE. Period.
I am also a mountain hunter above all...
Mr. Dorleac, I have a question related to the Zeiss V8, as an example of a really BIG scope in a hunting rifle.
The question is: what do you consider, in your experience, a biggest hunting scope good to resist many shoots with a big game rifle with serious recoil, starting with the .375 H&H in a light rifle, ending with a .458 Lott, for example.
Sorry by my question in this thread, but I see this big and heavy scope in a rifle as the motive to do that...!
Thank you!

PatagonHunter

PatagonHunter,

It must be admitted that the German and Austrian optics are currently the best.
Personally I have simple tastes and I'm satisfied with the lightweight Z3 from SWAROVSKI but I owe to the truth in recognizing that the ZEISS scopes, Victory HT or V8 are absolutely superb in terms of light transmission and image sharpness.
Although I prefer to use a 3.5-18x44 Z5 on my technical mountain rifles, I think it's hard to beat a V8 for long range shooting ... as long as you are ready to live with its monstrous clutter and weight.
With a body of 36mm it is better to use a ZM rail for the rear claw mount and as for the toughness, a V8 is just as resistant as a military series S&B and to date I have not heard or know any problems with these scopes, even mounted on 8x68S or other breaking caliber.
Obviously this is only my personal opinion.

Perhaps a 4 cylinder or V6 telescope next time
