Mannlicher Schoenauer barrel size

Gentleman, could anybody please tell me if the if the Model 1908 in 8x56MS has the same outside barrel dimensions as the Model 1903 in 6.5x54MS for the same length of barrel. Thanks in advance.

Just look at both side by side and the 8x56 is slightly larger.

I figured that the barrel may be slightly smaller although lots of manufacturers use the same sized barrel with a different bore if the bore sizes are close.

Unfortunately I didn't have a Model 1903 with a barrel to compare, hence the question.

I checked a few of mine tonight and can offer the following barrel diameter measurements as taken at the muzzle:

Mod 1903/6.5MS is 0.621"
Mod 1908/8mmMS is 0.620"
Mod MC/7x57Mauser is 0.638"

All of the above are full-length stocks.

Apologies for this belated reply but I have been travelling over the last two weeks. Please find below the requested information about M. 1903 & M. 1908 barrels' size:


Measures come from the following rifles:
- Model 1908 - Take Down - Pre 1925 - This rifle was already presented on the Forum.
- Model 1908 - Stutzen - 1919 - Not yet presented on the Forum.
- Model 1903 - Stutzen - 1926 - This rifle was already presented on the Forum. Note that it may not be the best example of a standard 'stutzen' as it's barrel has the same length as rifle or take-down versions; however the stock looks original and bears inside the rifle's serial number so I assume it was a special order.

Measurements were made at:
- The far side (closest from the muzzle) of the ring on which is set the rear sight; this ring is soldered at the same place for my M. 1903 & 1908 rifles.
- The far side (closest from the muzzle) of the ring on which is set the front swivel; this ring is soldered at the same place for my M. 1903 & 1908 rifles.
- The muzzle.

Skeet, thank you for doing that, I had a feeling that the barrels would be the same size. Interesting that the 7x57 is bigger by almost half a millimeter.

Louis, thank you as well, great little photo and cleverly done. Interesting that on yours the 1903 is actually slightly larger in diameter at every point compared to the 1908.
