Not really, I would say only part that is Lee Speed-BSA Sporter is the butt stock & possibly the mag !

No you did nothing wrong, good of you to pass info on, most of us Speeder freaks know of these rifles for sale & most good & proper ones go fast !

Lots of people still don't know what they are looking at on these !

Confused description. Some paragraphs suggest it is a sporter pushed into militsry service. Other paragrpahs suggest it is a military rifle sporterised. The latter seems more likely.

It was definitely made as a commercial rifle, quite possibly a CLLE as Hihgwood states. It appears to have a faint military inspection mark on the knox form denoting conformity to a military specification so that the rifle could be used in military rifle competitions. If so the butt has been added later, as it would have to have had a military style butt originally. It's a bit hard to see the inspection mark clearly.

Whatever the case it has seen military service because of the two sold out of service marks.

Apart from the above there does not appear to be any other military proof or inspection marks on any other components.

Looking at the serial number its quite an early rifle.

that is a really strange rifle. I would love to see the build sheet for it.

it looks like it must have originally been a commercial full wood target pattern rifle, but where is the safety? it doesn't have the cocking piece safety or the cut out in the bottom of the cocking piece for the SMLE type safety either.

were they allowed thumb safeties in military rifle comps?

if it had a metford barrel i'd think it was originally was a commercial MLM II but they state it has enfield rifling. neither the action or the barrel look to be restamped and it has a pre SMLE knox form so it is not a replacement SMLE barrel marked to match (plus in ww1 the barrel was the control item not the action).

the owner of the site knows lee speeds inside and out. , as well as all things lee metford and early lee speeds.

and he is, and has been, out of lee speeds for some time now. given his work schedule, his site is not all reflective on what he has. he is a very busy, very nice, and very professional. i have limited experience dealing with him, but it has all been positive. HOWEVER...as he mentions on his suite, he is busy and may take quite some time getting back to you
