Siamese Mauser
      #293864 - 15/01/17 01:23 PM

Ladies and gentlemen I purchased a Siamese action a few months back for very cheap (80.00+ffl and shipping). I have a post in the classifieds section for trading a husky for an .303. Well, I want to build a rifle in a classic clambering, and have thought about wildcats off the .303 or just the plain .303, 30-40 krag, or something off the .348 Winchester. Anyway I want the opinion of our members here to steer me in the right direction

Hi again Joshua, my Siamese Mauser is currently chambered in 7.62x54R.Cases and loaded ammo are easy to get,I have been using some Russian made steel case stuff with 250gr soft nose and it hits like a ton of bricks, but feels like a shotgun to shoot.
All I did was fit an old 303 SMLE barrel to it and cut a new chamber....its a roughy but its hell on pigs...fitted an old Pecar 4x post and crosshair scope to it and made it even better.

......its about to get a new G&H style stock, a new barrel in 405 Grenadier and a general tart up for the old girl.

What scope mounts are you guys using on them? As for fitting a SMLE Barrel, beyond the new chamber being cut, was there anything else to be done to that Barrel to have it put on the Siamese? Beautiful rifles to you both by the way. Cordite, who made that stock? I love the looks of it

Lancaster, I have given thought to the .50 Alaskan, but the .50-110 does intrigue me. Any added benefit to doing that round ?

well, is an american classic, its a big bore where you can use any .510 bullet up to 500 grain and in a mauser action good for loads up to 4000 -4500 ft·lbf what is enough for any north american game.
no problem to load it down with cast lead bullets because of the cylindrical cases desigh!

Curious if you have any experience with that round? What might the ballistics be? I would like something from .35-.510"

loooong time ago I had to load for a belgium cape gun in 50-110 and 12 ga( cape gun because the rifle barrel was on the left side)maybe made for the colonial market once. it was not my gun and sold when the ammo project was ready. in this days I had to load in lathe turned NDFS brass from england if someone here still remember this.
12 ga brenneke slugs were loaded in magtech brass.
anyway, it was my only encounter with this cartridge that exist as a BP and a more powerful Nitro load.the case looks like an oversized .357 Mag case, not to big but big enough for anything.

That sounds very interesting. I am not 100% sure, but doesn't starline offer 50-110 brass? If so, Lancaster may have a great idea. I know at one time it was a black powder cartridge but are there any smokeless loads for it? Is it a fairly accurate round? Will it function thru the 3.1" action?
For the 7.62x54R, I have read of various 9.3 wildcats off of it, but not much larger. Does anyone know of a larger diameter bullet in that case?
What about a shortened NE case that would function thru it?

Yes, local gunsmith (now pensioned) has build such wildcat here in Finland. He used to convert Baikal side-by-side shotguns to double rifle long before factory-made ones so I believe this this caliber has designed for these doubles.

No problem igorrock. I figured if I can't make a decision lol, the members here will get a crack at it. I will throw this out there tho, the round I have thought about is the .35-.348 win improved. But the trouble of getting brass brings an issue, along with wanting something larger. One of many ideas has been blowing the .303 case or x54 case out to hold a .411-.458" bullet. Not after or needing a fast cartridge, so something in the 1800-2300 fps range is fine with me.
What I do want is a parent case that is readily available and reasonably cheap. Something with loads available. And minimum work needed to the action

I have a few lee Speeds that need new barrels & was going over my ideas of cartridge canadates with a member on this forum, thinking of 40/60 Maynard (loaded nitro) & 405 Win, maybe shortened, which he went on to do, I supplied the brass for that job also !

Seems to have been given the credit for that idea now how ever !

Any way 40/60 Maynard can be formed from belown out 303 or 30/40 Krag, no doubt 7.62X54R belown out could get you to a 45 cal, but then you may as well go to 45/70 which is almost common on the Siamese may be 45/90 is doable, 50 Alaskan is also done, your can form brass from the 348 or I'm sure Starline & others do brass for this now days !

Sarg, you bring up a good idea with the Maynard round. Never thought of that one, nor really read up on it either. But the use of a common parent case draws me to it more than some I have thought of. Sent you a pm by the way

I have NoI MkIII Enfield in 7x57R, but a 9, 9.3, 9.5 or .40 calibre works just as well in either the x57 or 303 case for the enfields or the 7.62x54R ( or 444 Marlin ) case in the Siamese. All of which are easy cases to find.I think from memory that the 54mm Russian case is very similar to the original Siamese 8mm case,I have had no feeding problems with mine.

.....did you get my email ?
