How are Vierlings regulated?
      #291861 - 13/12/16 01:57 AM

In the case of different caliber rifle barrels, how are they regulated for optics? I have been looking at a few, and the ability to regulate a different size, gr, weight bullet to an optic eludes me.

Any insight would be appreciated!

good question, never had a vierling in my hands I suspect they are regulated in a way the small bullet will shot to the same point like the big bullet to 50 or 80 meter depends on its a 22 rimfire or the 5,6x35R Vierling /22 Hornet

The same way as with double rifles, Bergstutzen etc with fixed barrels.
The shooter has no way to change anything, except the sights or scope of course.
Regulation of the barrels is done by the gunmaker, using the cartridges that are agreed upon with the customer.
The customer is advised to use only these brands, loads, preferably also the same lots that were used in the regulation process. And sensibly stock up with a good quantity of these cartridges.

If you want to shoot other loads, or have purchased an old gun, it will be trial and error with factory loads, tuning by handloading, or a trip to a good gunsmith for re-regulation.

Good advice Fuhrmann. To which I would add, re-crowning the barrel can help if 2 barrels won't regulate, (worked for my Bock-Drilling. A jewellers lupe can give you a feeling for the state of the crown). Also care in sandbagging, (same point of contact each time), lots of time between shots for the barrel/s to cool as thin barrels do shift their POI. Establishing what the original load was, either from proof marks and/or from old catalogues of the same era.

A change in bullet weight or type, (or powder) may help. Another thing that can help is to mark the bullet number using a spotting scope on a sheet of paper at hand. What you're trying to do is pick up if they are crossing over mid-way. A chronograph will let you track how more or less powder is working to shift POI. In short, careful observation and good records.

Sometimes Drillings were made to use lighter or heavier bullets than you would expect and suddenly, everything is meeting up.

Incidentally, I had a Drilling in 7x57R with a rail scope that needed replacing. The gunsmith "regulated" it by bore-sighting it on a house several miles away over a lake. When I shot it later at 100 yards, it was nearly spot on.
