It has fired around 100 shots only. So- not quite broken it yet. You need to guess who make it! Forgot to add, .50 cal. 48" bl.

Yes - my bro!
You win, a free 'entry fee'($45.00) to Rendexvous B.C. held this year at Hefley Creek, B.C. August 26th to 3rd September. Must come to the rendezvous to collect.

The original, of course, was scribed:

This Rifle Made by
A.Verner, Gun Smith

with the "h" in Smith having the identical appearance to the one on this rifle's box. Indeed, it is pretty close to a bench copy of a rifle made by A Verner in 1790 - & IT'S MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Note - God willing, this will be one of Taylor's "winning rifles" at Hefley this year. They almost always grace the winner's circle. It is a small event, though, with only about 150 competitors. If I do not do well with it, I'll have to cheat and use my 14 bore rifle, another of "his".

I thought I recognized the rifle from several years ago. Lovely rifle there.

Can't make it to Hefley Creek this year--saving up for a new dream rifle of my own--but maybe some year. Have fun!

Sorry to hear that, Jim. I told Taylor tonight at the R&G club annual meeting - he's the pres - AGAIN! I'll honour your educated guess/win when you do make it!

Yes I am, Matt - very lucky indeed. You would not believe how well her front sight hangs on the centre of a target - 48" of swamped barrel surely helps.

I feel the need to take her out tomorrow and get her all dirty. She'll be a dirty girl tomorrow. LOL

Daryl,
What a beautiful rifle! I was going to guess that your brother had made it but someone else beat me to it. That is top notch workmanship, and I know what I'm talking about. I have seen thousands of flinters and none are any better than that one. I even made my living for a short while by building carved and inlaid rifles but never built one that would top that one. I am interested to know who made the long barrel for it? Those are very hard to come by and quite costly to boot. Bob

Daryl,
Does your new 50 caliber have a swamped barrel or is it straight walled? What does it weigh? Thanks for sharing it with us. Bob

Swamped, Bob - 7 pounds 14 ounces - a bit on the light side but it's length makes up for it and as noted, the barrel is swamped with a long swamp.
The balance point is the middle of the Entry-Pipe's tube.(brass piece where ramrod enters the stock for those not familiar with ML parts).
As a standard Siler flint-lock was not correct, Taylor converted a Siler cap-lock (plate was easily made correct) to look like the A. Verner lock in the "collector's book" - can't remember the name of it - CLA or something like that.

The pan, hammer(frizzen), cock and feather spring and internals are all flint-related parts that needed to be "added".

I'm pretty sure the barrel was a one-off order from John Getz, the son or our dear departed friend, Don Getz. He is missed by the 'flock'.

Bob - if you come to Rendezvous BC 2016 - I'll cover your camping-entry fee as well. But note - you'll have to shoot against this remarkable rifle!

EXCELLENT rendition of the famous A. Verner rifle.

That rifle is truly one of the best and most noteworthy of the early American longrifles. Most experts agree that is is "pre-Goldan age" in that it has features that make us believe it is a pre-Rev-War gun.

Your brother is truly one of the masters of today.

Thanks guys - Taylor is quite proud of this rifle and says it is his "best" & seems happy to keep it in the Family where it will be cared for properly. Last time out on the trail walk, I used her - and quite well. Apart from the string cut, I think I missed only 4 targets - good for me with a 'flinter'.
Made some nice shots on the plates - even the 109yard rabbit - centre of mass. LOL. Not a huge target. All offhand, of course.

Daryl,

I just dropped in on the Muzzloading Forum. Haven't been here for a long time and catching up. I know very little about muzzleloaders in general, but I know enough to see the rare beauty in this rifle and to envy the lucky owner.

I would love to have a piece of Taylor's talent here in Virginia. I will not forget the afternoon I spent in his basement shop with you and Taylor admiring the work he had in progress and the rifles he calls his own.

Please give Taylor my regards; and of course, Tammy and I send our best to you and Tracy.

Thanks Roscoe & Ripp.
I am very fortunate indeed- not only to have such a talented brother (lop-sided family - LOL), but having a couple of his rifles & a handgun as well. I would have more, but being mortal and not wealthy, well, that's the story.
