Thanks guys. Hendrik, I hope you are enjoying the Westley. This reminds me....guns can now be exported from the States to AU, NZ or Canada very reasonably as Hendrik can attest.

I suppose you realise that you can get the details and date of the original purchaser from the original Army & Navy record books, held by the University of Glasgow?

I have just done this for a Rook rifle. They will tell you the details for free, or will supply digital photographs for about $50. It is all done via e-mail and takes about a fortnight (oops, that's 14 days for our American cousins)

I did not know that the info was free if you did not want the digital photo....good to know, thank you. Would you be able to forward me the email address?

For Steve and everyone else:

I got in touch with the University of Glasgow archives on:

dutyarch@archives.gla.ac.uk

The Army & Navy became a chain of department stores which fairly recently merged with the House of Fraser, a Scottish chain of similar stores. Their records show when the gun was taken into stock, who the actual maker was and also when it was sold, which in some cases was two or three years later. Might be useful with your BATF rule about 'made before 1898' [from memory].

We also have a 1898 or 1900 rule - but - there must be NO factory ammo available for it - otherwise, no different than any other firearm - firearm license required.
So - will it shoot factory any ammo as in 2 3/4" - then firearm.

As most factory 2 3/4" 16 bore is 2 5/8" there is usually no problem in 2 1/2" chambers. Besides, shooting safely is not necessary - will factory ammo chamber and shoot, is the only aspect that matters.

Thank you Historic Bore. I just sent them an email. This one is on my books as a gun so needs to go the formal route no matter when it proves to have been built.

What other guns are in their archive?
I will contact them for info on my 1902 Webley. Probably should have done that before rebarreling. ;-)
