Walk with 318WR

Went for a walk with the Westly Richards yesterday arvo. Did a few lagoons with no results. Had a small herd of buff come out of a small creek and all covered in mud so decided to have a look.Fresh sign on the first freshwater mangrove spot so crossed the creek towards some bamboo and bumped a pig. He went up the bank and into the burnt stuff. When I finaly spotted him he turned and started going away from me. A quick off hand Texas shot and he was hit hard but made it back into the creek. Put a finisher in. A nice old boar in poor condition, but a good set of hooks.

Pretty impressed with the William Evans so far. Both 250's penetrated the full length of the boar.

Great rifle and a nice pig!
I really like the old classic Mausers and seeing them put to thier intended use.

Well done Mick. 250 grain bullets are probably the best weight in many different calibers, always very reliable. One of the reason they are available from .323 right up to .375 and everything in between. IMO.

Great!. Yes these long bullets penetrate pigs and larger game very well. Thanks for sharing.

Not wrong about a decent set of hooks Mick!
I reckon put the new tipped hydros in the 318's diet & I reckon those buff would be on the deck in no time flat!

One of Nitro Express`s own, Matt Schmidt has another good article in Australian Deer Hunter Magazine`s October edition.

It is very informative about the .318 Westley Richards and worth a look at the pics and of course the reading.

No didnt shoot him, and they are introduced. The 318 will get a run on buff late next year.

9.3x64 - hydros not listed in 318/ .330 unfortunatly.

I have always admired the 318 and the 333 Jeff, but in the SA brass for both is quite expensive and so are bullets. So here the common alternative is to convert military Mausers (and several other actions too) to the 338/06. I have made many of them. In also have owned a few myself. The last one I had I traded to a man who has been using it since then, and last I heard he liked it very much.

The benefits of a tough 33 cal 250 grain bullet going between 2200 to 2600 FPS is undeniable and the recipe works very well on all game up to about 1800 pounds. In fact there are reports of it doing satisfactory work on game even larger.

It's a great way to go for a working gun.

The .318 WR (.330) was the forerunner of the .338 Win Mag, .338/06 etc.

It was consider a great buffalo slayer in its day with the 250 gr bullet and before later a minimum of .375 was introduced in the client safaru age.

WDM Bell killed a lot of elephant with the .318 WR with the 250 gr FMJ. In his earlier books he writes of the .275 Rigby. In later writings he usually refers to the .318 WR as being hsi choice for the "big rifle".

Anoter writer, was it Berger (?), mentions his battery was a .318 WR bolt rifle and a .450 NE double.

Great stuff Mick. I am very jealous of that fantastic rifle!
