Ruger #1 and woodleigh bullets
      #291162 - 01/12/16 12:22 AM

Greetings everyone, i am a new member from Tennessee and wanted to say thanks for letting me join this forum.I love looking at all the great pics and reading the articles..Now i need to ask a question. I have been messing around with a Ruger #1 chambered in 405 win. for a couple of yr.s.I have been loading 300 gr hornady fp .411 bullets and would like to try some woodleigh 300 gr. but can only find them in .412 size.I don't think i would have any problem but load data is kind of hard to find.I may need to slug my barrel first but maybe someone can save me the extra work lol. I would be greatfull for any advice on this subject. Thanks in advance

JD
Contact Lee manufacturing and have them make you a .411 sizer if they don't already list one. The price is about $30. It won't be hard at all to size the .412s down a thou to .411 then use you current data if you like how it shoots.
Best.

Thanks 50calshtr for the help..I may just try the 412 size and see what happens.I don't think 1 thou bigger would hurt anything with a reduced load to start with but not sure.I didn't know Lee made a bullet sizer, good info. Thanks

What do the .412's measure? Mic or measure with a good set of dial calipers to see if they are indeed, .412.

They may be .4115" and if so, or even at .412, if a new bullet fits easily into a fired case mouth, the .412's will work just fine.

Lee can make you a die as noted by 50Calshtr, however they may not list the die you want on the web site - you would have to phone and speak to the Custom Department.

We here at NE have been sizing down oversized bullets for years.

The .001" may work just fine as noted above. Start at the first suggested load in a manual and go from there. Don't reduce manual loads below their starting place.

.001" oversize is generally no problem at all, as long as the rifle's chamber neck isn't too tight for them. To have a problem with a mere .001" is highly unlikely, afterall, it is only .0005" per side.

I don't have the woodleighs yet but plan on ordering them today.Kynoch loads a 300 gr. , probably the same bullet but i cant find any info.I've been hand loading for over 30 yrs. and always back off a few grains when i change components, just to be on the safe side.I agree with you Daryl and thanks for the input.Ain't it fun to work with an old round like the 405!

For me, that is the joy in making something work. I tend to lose interest & get bored with a gun, once the puzzle is solved or the gun shoots well. Then, It's time to sell it if something else looks interesting.
There are a few that I've kept just because they proved to be special - the .375/06IMP is one such rifle.

Hi, the Woodleigh reloading manual says the 300grn RNSN is .412" and the 400gr RNSN is .411" If you want some suggest loads from the manual just let me know which bullet and some powders you may be using.

Cheers
Greg

PS. The .001" difference wont be noticed by a Ruger No.1

Rule303 i would love to have a few good loads for the 300gr. Woodleigh. I have good luck with H4895 and the 300gr Hornady FP at around 2250 fps.I really like the looks of that Woodleigh round nose and will probably try some of the 400's later. Thanks for the help..
