6.5 Creedmoor
      #291118 - 30/11/16 12:49 PM

I was at my sisters over Thanksgiving and a new Ruger Precision rifle followed me home. It is in 6.5 Creedmoor. I am currently working on mounting a Night Force scope with a 56mm objective lens so I have rings ordered for it. Wish I could shoot it. Has anyone worked with the 6.5 Creedmoor. Any loading data would be appreciated especially using the 140gr Hornady ELD bullets.

You are a lucky man. Is this the 2.0 version or the original model??

I picked up a Bargara in 6.5 a couple months ago. To date have been hunting and/or gone too much to do anything with it at this point. I am with you, I plan to try it with the ELD's for paper..and might even use the Bergers ON PAPER as I have about 2000 of them .. Will NEVER us a BERGER for hunting ever again..they are not a hunting bullet no matter what the tv shows and Berger tries to tell you..

Curious what you come up with. Please post your results. I plan to get to mine in the early spring. And like you, plan to throw a Nightforce on it . Think for target shooting that is a perfect scope. Too heavy for a hunting scope for my tastes, but for target they are hard to beat.

Mine is the second generation. Ruger had to fix an issue with the bolt on the first ones. They also added a muzzle brake so that may save you a few bucks.

Wayne; I am curious to what was the issue with the bolt on the 1st. rugers, I have one in 6.5 creedmoor and have been shooting it a fair bit. We have a place we can safely shoot 1000 yds. and so far I find it quite accurate. The reason I didn't mention any loads, I am still working on that myself. Also the gun has been put away for the winter. Al

There was just a show on the second generation this past week..they were incredibly impressed with the accuracy of it..they were shooting at 400 yards..it was basically shooting factory ammo into groups of 1/4 to 1/2" ..impressive...the one they were shooting was in .308W...I like the 6.5 better. Think you have yourself an awesome rifle ...let us know how it turns out for you...

AL from what I am told the back part of the bolt where the tool were hidden was made of plastic and was causing problems. I have no experience personally but that is what I was told. the whole bolt on the second gen is made of steel.

Wayne59; Thanks for the response. I replaced that plastic piece with an aluminum one , also replaced the bolt knob. So far the hornady factory ammo was shooting better than my reloads. We are shooting at targets approximately 10" X 14" and hitting them more than missing. Very happy with the Rifle so far. As I say we are not shooting now as it is to cold and wet up here. Will be shooting again in the spring. Al

G'Day Fella's,

Wayne59, I don't own a 6.5 Creedmore but I do own a 6.5 x 47 Lapua chambered bolt rifle.
This is actually a 26" barrel, for a switch barrel rifle of mine.
From what I understand the 6.5 Creedmore and 6.5 x 47 Lap are very similar sized cases. So you may be able to use similar Starting Loads, for both chamberings and work up from there.

The accuracy load I use in my 6.5 x 47 Lap consists of 40 grains of ADI AR-2209 (H 4350) and Sierra 142grn MK and Nosler 140grn CC bullets along with Lapua Cases, CCI BR4 Small Rifle primers.
Whilst this is not a Maximum load in this rifle (it is close to it), it achieves just over 2700fps, and if I do my part, it shoots ragged one hole groups.

Wayne, here is a link I found that does a comparison on the .260Rem -6.5x47-6.5 Creedmore.
http://demigodllc.com/articles/6.5-shootout-260-6.5x47-6.5-creedmoor/

Hope that helps

I found out one of my friends that dose custom load development has worked up loads for three different rifles. He should be a good source for data. IMR or H 4350 seem to be the powder of choice. The 6.5 creedmoor uses a large rifle primer and carries a slightly larger case capacity than the Lupua. Both shoot 140gr bullets in around 2700fps. He had nothing but praise for the Creedmoor. I have a 338 lapua but I am selling it. Its accurate but has two much recoil shooting it off the bench. My rings came in today. Guess where I will be tomorrow.

Progress report. For once all the hype was true. Took the gun to the range today. Kind of cold with a 5 to 15 mile an hour nasty tail wind. First five shoot group with Hornady 120gr A Max factory ammo measured .486. I almost fell over. Very easy to shoot gun. I think it is a Keeper.

The RPR is an interesting rifle. I handled one in .243 at a local shop when they first came out.

That's great, Wayne. With a lot of rifles - or loads, you really have to knuckle down & concentrate hard to get a good groups. Others seem easy in comparison, almost lackadaisically handled and shooting wonderfully good groups.

THOSE rifles are KEEPERS.

Another interesting article on the 6.5 Creedmore..
How barrel length affects velocity ..not much from 27" to 24" out to 800 yards..interesting ...

I may have to check the velocity on the Hornady 120gr match loads tomorrow. I forgot to do it today.

Thank you for the article Ripp. I had actually already read it. I am considering some Berger VLD bullets. Ruger has made these rifles with an extremely long lead. I am currently trying Hornady EXL-D 143gr bullets but am not having the success I was hoping for. May have to go with a different powder.

Daryl. I am still trying to get the gun to preform the way I want at 100yds. I just tried my first hand loads with 143gr projectiles yesterday. I couldn't find the powder I think I need so I tried another powder. I found some H4350 today so will be starting over today. Also the only Brass I could get was Hornady and It isn't very consistent. It vary as much as 5grs (internal capacity). Its just to early to predict what it going to do. Powder is still tuft to get. I wish people would stop hoarding powder and primers.

Powder and primers are actually getting a lot easier to get in these neck of the woods..can pretty much buy what I want like days of old with the exception of .22Mag...still like hens teeth...

Not having much problem finding loaded ammo just cant afford to shoot it. Those assholes in the white house managed to accomplish one thing they doubled the cost of ammo and components. Federal match grade primers are still very hard to get.

I was actually lucky enough to get a case of large and mag Fed match grade primers last week...

Agree, the ammo is not what it once was as in cost..22 rimfire can still be very cheap comparatively..and makes for good practice/fun...

Just put together a little remake of my 30 year old 10/22...custom barrel, stock and trigger..ordered a new scope that I am still waiting for..but man its fun to shoot and accurate...

BTW--based on our other conversation---plan to put this guy on my 6.5 Creedmore..been researching for about 2 weeks..this is my decision..

I see - good luck.

Reloader powders (RE#19) worked so well in my daughter's .260 - have to be good in the Creedmoor.

H4350 seems to be the "go-to" powder for the Creedmoor.
