ZG47, 8x64S

I have just acquired a BRNO ZG47 in 8x64S Brennecke. The rifle has a 24" barrel, a cheekpeice and a pistol grip cap. The receiver is polished and blued to match the rest of the metal work.
Does anyone have any information ofn the 8x64S cartridge?

The 8X64 is basically the 8mm-06 (which is the 8X63) and there is quite a bit of loading data for the 8mm-06. Great round and the ZG-47 is a wonderful piece of BRNO history. With only about 20,000 made, you have a fairly rare animal. Great rifle - put it to work!

Thanks TJ. I am trying to figure out if I can neck down .35 Whelen brass to make 8x64s. The 8x64 case is a little longer and has a shorter neck than the '06 and the rim to shoulder length that is vital for proper head space is also longer.
I like the BRNO ZG47. It is an interesting variation of the 98. I already had one in .30-06. A 21.6" barrelled gun with vapor blast receiver, no cheekpiece or pistol grip cap but in near mint condition.

Beautiful looking rifle and a good calibre. The timber is how I like it. Plain with good grain flow the whole length. As you would know 35 Whelen brass is the same as 30-06 brass. All I can suggest is google the Whelan and check the specs. Check 7X64 brass-Proper Euro brass- that may have the correct dimensions. Also with 06 brass if H/S is a problem you can fire form the brass. The claw extractor should hold the case and allow an effective striker hit on the primer.

Just checked the Barnes manual. the 06 & Whelen have the same base to shoulder length and shoulder angle. The 06 is slightly longer to the neck. This tells me the Whelan is A 30-06 necked to 358 so the head space datum point will be the same for both.

Check the overall lengths in case you have to trim them, but yes - neck the .35's down, creating a false shoulder, until they chamber. that will take care of the headspace. If you make it right for the first firing & never push them back again, you'll never have a case separation.

Any 8mm/06 data should be usable, at least as a start. If you don't have any - mail or pm me. e-mail is in my profile.

Thanks Rule 303. The reason for the Whelen case over the 06 is that when you neck down the Whelen in a 8x64S full length sizing die it will create a false shoulder that will provide the correct headspace for fire forming. No need to trim as the 64S case is a little bit longer. I prefer this method to seating the bullets way out and getting a crush fit.I have 50 cases that should last me a while.

Thanks Daryl. Not much info on loads for this cartridge. The case capacity is about 1gr more than the 06 so 8mm-06 loads should work fine. I love 200gr Nosler partitions.

I have a ZG47, originally in 7X64, which I had rebored to 8X64S. It is a hammer on white tail deer. I killed two with it last year. I have a German reloading manual with a whole page of loads for the 8X64S, which I will be glad to scan and email to you, if you will give me your email address. Use a PM, if you want to keep it private.

I also have a Krieghoff Neptun sidelock drilling originally in 16/16/7X65R, which I had rebored to 8X65RS. I think that it should prove its worth on pigs, with Brennekes in the shot barrels, should I ever get the opportunity.

Hi,

I don't have my 8x64S longer but once I have it, I loaded with 180 gr TSX to about 2800 fps. That was ha hammer och moose and boars. That load shot very accurate, aprox 4 shots sub MOA on 100 meters.
I loaded with Norma 203-B, nearly the same as Reloader 15.

Whit heavier bullets I tested out RWS EVO 200 gr, whish I loaded to 2850 fps. It's not that good precision as the TSX bullet but still good enough for hunting.

8x64S it's a killer, that speed I get in my gun it's close behind a .338 Win Mag, but with much less powder.
