The style of the service load info: 2.67 gramm GewehrBlaettchenPulver = 41.2gr rifle flake powder / Stahlmantel Geschoss = steel jacketed bullet shows the receiver was civilian proofed in Suhl or Zella Mehlis first pre-1912. At least, it has been restocked and most likely rebarreled, perhaps several times. The scope is of 1920s -30s vintage. Take the rifle apart and post photos of all marks and numbers you may find under barrel, receiver, on magazine and bolt. These marks may allow closer dating and perhaps establishing origin of the parts. Also, the shape of the bolt handle and the set trigger mechanism are important.

The action of the rifle is a Mauser, Oberndorf, commercial one as sold by the Mauser factory as "action only" to other gunmakers, both German and British. The Mauser serial number 26140 dates it to 1908. The CROWN – crown/N proofmarks indicate nitro proof, using the smokeless "4000 atm special proof powder". Someone bent the bolt handle back, probably when the rifle was rebarreled and restocked with that 1950s style "monte carlo" stock. Such stocks with slanting, contrasting foreend tips became popular in the 1950s, aping Weatherby's "California style".

Thanks greatly for the info.... So would this rifle really only be worth action price?

As a side note, how common was the Mauser name? I only ask as my wifes great grand mothers maiden name was Mauser.....

Cheers,
Mark.

Action + scope value or shooter's value. No collectors value any more. Would be a nice object for another restocking/restauration job.

According to this website http://www.verwandt.de/karten/absolut/mauser.html there are now about 1349 persons named Mauser living in Germany. The map shows the local distribution. Not a really frequent name, but not really rare either.

Unfortunately the stock is buggered and the rings need a fair bit of work. The 25-06 barrel is not what I have in mind for a classic rifle this should be....

Cheers,
Mark.

So I ended up with this as part of a bigger lot.... Not sure what to do with it but will be talking to a gunsmith tomorrow about being worthwhile to fix 'er up????? Thinking just a re-barrel and scope refurb and leave the stock as is less the light coloured forend tip...

Cheers,
Mark.

So a bit more thought needs to happen on this one and I'm open to ideas.... It will be a longer term do er uperer

Thinking calibre???? Keep it German and go with 7X57 or 8X68s, claw mounts the same and new stock or something like 318wr in a Rigby style stock????

Let's have it...

Cheers,
Mark.

The 8x68s would be good. If going with a Rigby style stock it would require less drop at the heel so you can comfortably use the scope. So a modern Rigby style

To be honest Greg, the 8x68 is probably low on the wish list...

Cheers,
Mark.

Mark, what are your preferences for this rifle? The 318 would be a cool choice as would a 350 Rigby mag. Any of the 57mm based cartridges would save you heap of gunsmith costs.

Always wanted to do a 350R but don't really wish to open the action, that's why I'm thinking 318 or 7x57
