Scope mounts for .318 by Manton & Co.
      #289810 - 03/11/16 10:13 PM

Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum although I have been reading the very informative threads already previously. This is my first post however.

I recently purchased a Mauser action rifle By Manton & Co. in .318, a caliber I have been wanting for long.

The rifle seems to be quite accurate enough for my purposes. About 2 inch groups at 100m with open sights using old Kynoch ammo. I am still waiting for brass and dies..

I want to do as little work on the rifle as possible, and hopefully I will be able to mount a scope using the existing side mount base (although it is probably not original). I would therefore appreciate any help in identifying the base and any advice on where it might be possible to find a matching ring part.

I will try to post some pictures below [image]https://www.dropbox.com/s/dd2quv9e44pu4rb/FullSizeRender%20%281%29.jpg?dl=0[/image]

Ok, that didn't seem to work. Any ideas what I did wrong in linking the image?

Most side mounts I've seen are griffin and Howe so could start googling pictures of them and see what matches as far as posting pix.its still all magic to me have to have a youngin around to make it happen. Welcome to the forum.its one of the better ones around.i wish only we had a few more active people.i try to post as many dumb questions as I can which at least gets everyone talking.

Thank you Huvius! I will try to upload some more pictures. The mount does not look like any Griffin & Howe I have seen.

I can add those pictures to your post when I get home this evening.
I don't think Dropbox acts as a hosting site the way Photobucket does.

Try right clicking the link in your Dropbox and see if you can choose it as an img file to copy into your post. That may work.

Nitro X will not allow posting photos from a few sites, Shutterfly (which I use a lot) is one.

So I opened an account in Photobucket, works fine. PS, Photobucket is real slow (plagued with ads)unless you pay a fee, about $30 a year. I paid the piper, and now Photobucket is really fast.

Here is a photobucket photo: The beginnings of a gun related project, I will start a thread as it progresses:

Many complain about PB,I pay and dont ever have any problems, like a buck a week ffs,why are people so miserable when they can drop $100 of ammo at the range,or on a couple of slabs of beer or even cigarettes.
As you said 'pay the piper'

Yep.

The increase in speed is well worth the cost to me, a plus is the extra storage space that comes with the piper's fee.

I spend more for propane in a year casting bullets and casting fishing sinkers!

If a gent has a vertical mill and sufficient tooling the rings would not be too difficult to make for this style of base.

More photos from my Photobucket account.

Photobucket is fast! The piper's version that is.

Making rings would be the best option as the old rings all seem to be very high to accomodate using the open sights. I just imagined it would not be very cheap. Any ideas who might be able to mill rings?

As the base has a dovetail, I would carefully measure and compare to the Weaver base rings made by Talley and Warne and others. You may be able to adapt a set with little machining. Later when I am in the shop I will measure some bases and post the dimensions.

You don't put rings on that side-mount base. You use the correct EAW / ERA / Recknagel roll-off mount, either in 1"/26mm, 30 mm, or for scopes using rails.

Not sure where that idea came from??? It may be the forum software does not work with that site, or more likely THAT SITE does not allow images to be portrayed here or off their site.

G'Day Fella's,

Urogallus, I'm wondering if Recknagel might make a base, and or rings to suit this rifle?
I have one of their recent catalogs somewhere here, I'll try to remember, locate it, and see what I can find (and report back)!

I don't know about Europe, but some years ago, I saw my friend Dave Norin build a rifle with identical side mounts made by a gunsmith in the US. I cannot remember who it was, at the moment. Age does that. Finland has many superb gunsmiths - perhaps one of them could machine what you need?

Sweet rifle! Great hunting!

Urogallus,

Can you please post a picture of the entire rifle? I am curious to see the forend and barrel configuration. Based one what you've shown so far, I wouldn't be surprised if this is an Oberndorf Mauser Type A or B model that was retailed through Manton's rather than made by Manton's.

Such a pity the stock has been cut away to accomodate the side mount.....

That is a nice rifle, i just missed it on the UK auction. Congratulations
