Hunting in France
      #26861 - 26/02/05 01:52 AM

Erik inspired me to post some of my photos from hunting in Europe:

Driven partridge in France:

Hunting ducks from a "gabion", a sort of fortifed "bunker" blind, like an old blockhouse. Used live duck decoys, and shot the ducks at night with high powered scopes. Very different experience.

Some woodcock hunting:

Then finally some driven hunts (battues) for roedeer and boars:

Great thing about hunting in France is that the food and wine are great!

In reply to:

Used live duck decoys,

How was this done? Were they tried to something to keep them from flying away?

Erik

Erik,

They were tied to little "rests" that sat under the water so they could stand on them and not get tired during the overnight hunt. They set them up in groups that are marked by all shooters so the "decoys" are not shot accidentally when the real ducks come in. I'd never seen something like that before.

It was funny since my friends said we were going duck hunting and on the way we stopped at a farm. Next thing I know was they handed me a burlap bag and said "go catch some ducks" so I was running arround grabbing farm ducks and putting them in the bag. I had no idea what was going on, I thought what the hell are these ducks for? Is this just in case we don't see any wild ducks, we shoot this guys farm ducks?? Well turns out they use them as decoys.

In NZ some guys clip the wings off ducks so they can't fly. Then put them on islands in the lakes and dams. This attracts more ducks to the islands. It is particularly done for breeding purposes as the clipped ducks breed and their offspring come back to the same place to breed as well.

Quote NitroX : “In NZ some guys clip the wings off ducks so they can't fly. Then put them on islands in the lakes and dams.”

In France, breeding calling ducks and mainly duck placement is a science. The breeding is thorougly done so as to produce different type of calling ducks. The best are the females which can vocalize up 10 different cries. Each female displays his own type of cry.
The number and the placement of the ducks is very important. It depends on moon, tide, season, wind and temperature. The breeders are real lunatics and they obtain fantastic results.
No improvisation with “appelants”.
