WR 400/360
      #289915 - 07/11/16 11:24 AM

I just picked up my new to me Westley Richards Box Lock in 400/360NE 2 3/4in, proofed for the 41gr 314gr load & I'm looking to start shooting it .

Came with a bit of Kynoch ammo loaded with 314gr soilds & 280gr 35cal mould - dies !

I know I need to slug the bore but has any one had any experience loading & or shooting this caliber ?

Hi Sarg,
Why does it have a 35cal mould? Surely it should be a 9.3 mould shouldn't it?

Well yes you would think that, but im afraid this bore on the WR's might be closer to .358 than .366
which will be a bugger really !

Groove diameter, you mean, I think.

The actual bore diameter is not important when deciding what jacketed diameter bullet to use, but becomes important with cast bullets with bore riding sections.

The normal Euro "bore" diameter for a 9.3, is .358", with a .366" groove diameter - as for the 9.3x62, etc, then .366" is normal for bore diameter for 9.5mm(.375 calibers).

Since the rifle came with a .358" mould casting the .280gr. RN bullet, this sounds like the old Lyman #3589 OBSOLETE mould. If it is, treasure it - it has been obsolete for many decades & it is a wonderful bullet, being a perfect RN shape with long-land bearing surface.

I just meant the barrel Daryl lol !

I was hoping to shoot 9.3 -.366 bullets but looks like it may use .358 or so.

The mould is a Lyman #2660009 & from 1993 inspected by Sharaleen !

Interesting #'ing -

I just found my Lyman #47 (newest Lyman Book I have) and it lists a new 280gr.(#2 alloy) RN G/C mould in .358" with the #3580009 in the .35 Whelen data. This bullet has a slightly longer body than the old #33589 mould.

If it is a .358" groove dia. then it would be a 400/350 which shares the same parent case with the 400/360.
I very much doubt that it will be a 350 though as that was a Rigby specialty and 360s were a common W.R. chambering.

A .358" cast bullet is perfect for paper patching to .366" though. Maybe that is what the previous owner used that mold for.

Very nice rifle from what can be seen from the photos!
I suppose this round would be close to the 9.3x74R in power?

You know, I have NO idea why I made the assumption about W.R. probably not making a 400/350...
MY Westley double is a 400/350!!!

That said, I fully expect that that .358 mold is just an extra and not intended for use in your gun.

Sarg, because those barrels look like they were originally bored and chambered for the 303, and then later altered to 400-360NE, would mean that a really careful measurement of both the bore and groove should be taken, as well as chamber dimensions.

I wouldn't be too concerned if it turns out to be a .358 groove as that should allow you to use 400-350NE cartridge cases and loads.
I've been shooting a 400-350NE for close to 20 years, and it is a great little cartridge.
You have a wide variety of bullets available including the wonderful Woodleigh 310 gn softs and solids.

Double check the bore, groove, and chamber measurements before doing anything else would be my advice.

Sarg

470 is right.......Absolutly do a chamber and bore cast....before doing anything.
