Steve Bertram finished my '02 Webley!
It is a large frame which could have handled a 577 but I thought that would be a bit much so we went with a 500 3".
Turned out quite nice I think.

Congratulations! That is a nice piece of work. I would be interested to know the weight. You may prefer shooting it as a .500BPE than as a NE. That's what I do with my Farquharson .450/400 3-1/4 NE. Nitro for black loads suit me just fine.

I'm not sure.
I bought it from George Caswell a few years ago. It was set up for long range BPCR with a long 45-90 Metford rifled barrel which I think was made by Snover.
I would guess that by the size of this action that it was originally a 500, 470 or maybe even a 577.
I will for sure shoot reduced loads in this gun although it does weigh 10lb 7oz which is right about what a 500/450 or 500/465 Holland Royal double weighs. I don't know if you can get much more weight in a falling block without adding a quarter rib or really heavy barrel.
Here are some weights of 1902 Webleys from the net.
400/350 8lb 4oz
375 Flanged Mag. 8lb 9oz
450NE 9lb 10oz.
450 NE 10lb 1oz
577 (100/750) 14lb 10oz

Turns out that it was originally chambered in 450NE.
I think it is too big an action for the 450 but maybe the next size down '02 Webley action was too small for the 450.
So, if one wanted the '02 in 450, he was faced with a too big or too small action and the '02 just didn't lend itself well for such a chambering.
I'd have to look through the Webley '02s of both sizes and see if there are many 450s.
My supposition is that there are 350s and maybe 400s built on the medium action and some 500s and 577s (maybe 470s) on the large action but there wasn't an action size that lent itself well to the 450.
Anyway, I'm very happy we went with the 500 in that light.

Interesting. That (beautiful rifle, BTW) looks to have no more recoil than my 14 bore Sporting Rifle with it's moose hunting load.
482gr. ball and 165gr.2F.

Yeah, much more manageable than I expected and that's with factory Hornady ammunition!
I also find it nice (funny) that it looks like such a heavy duty piece of artillery in hand but looks quite svelte in the video. (maybe just svelte compared to the shooter!!)
It is becoming one of my favorite rifles and actually is the closest I have to being made expressly for me.

I saw Ben’s rifle while at Steve Bertram’s, it is even nicer to hold in person.
Would be interesting to chonograph those loads.

Very nice rifle. For easy and cheaper plinking loads or even just light game loads I'd go with a cast bullet and a suitable light load of fast burning shotgun/pistol powder. I don't know if you can get French made Vectan powder anywhere in the States but Vectan AS (green and red flake powder) is superbly clean burning for light cast loads. It is equivalent to Red Dot but leaves no residue in the barrel other than a light stain which wipes clean with one pass of a dry wipe.
I used a lot of it for competition trap shooting and never had to clean out the U/O action. Now use it for light 404 cast bullet loads, actual same charge weight (22.0grs) I used in 12G 32gm lead loads gives me 1400fps with a 400gr bullet in the 404. No need for fillers either. I imagine you don't want powder residue of any type falling back into the Webley or similar action type as they wouldn't be the easiest to clean?
