Picked up my Ruger #3 Custom today from Lohman Gunsmithing (Lohman Arms) located on the West Side of Houston. This project has been sitting in the corner of my loading room for years and it finally got finished. I would like to put in a plug for Roy Heggernes who did the work on this piece. Roy is a graduate of the Colorado School of Trades and did the finish shaping, fitting, finish and checkering of the wood. He also polished the rough turned octagon barrel and blued the rifle. Roy's checkering is very good......and he is still young. He will likely be a known maker in the future.

The lad certainly did beautiful work on your rifle; bloody nice piece of timber you have there TJ!
What calibre is your No3 by the way?

Hi TexasJohn,
Really nice job on the No3. They come up nicely with a new stock. What calibre? They are now commanding a large premium in the market over here now and have become too expensive for a donor. I have a very nice No1 in 450-400 that I have had fully restocked.
Congrats.

I amended the post to reflect that it is chambered in .221 Fireball. This is a hummer of a choice in a rifle. Burns 1/2 the powder of a .223 and delivers over 3000 fps with a 40 grain pill. Makes it easy on barrels, cheap to load for and practical in the field for most shots on varmints.

Very nice with a lovely piece of timber. Good cartridge as well.

Spectacular wood indeed - what are you putting on it for a scope?

Since this rifle will require a scope with a long tube or generous eye relief, I have an old steel tube Weaver K-10 that should be back from re-work at Iron Sight, Inc. any time now that will probably go on it. It has a very long tube that allows me to adjust my eye relief.
