Mauser 71 sporter from Paul Mauser collection ?
      #288570 - 01/10/16 08:27 PM

Mauser 71 sporter on egun auction:
short 71 action, signed "Geb. Mauser &Cie. Oberndorf a/N Württemberg 1878" caliber not really known, maybe 9,5x47. Tubular magazine with cut off.
Barrel and system numbered 01, trigger, buttplate and stock 02.
The painted "41" on the stock is maybe an inventory number from the mauser collection. ( Doesnt fit with the inventory list in Speeds "Orig. Oberndorf sporter rifles).
This is the rifle from page 25 in Jon's book.
Rifle came 30 years ago from an uncle of an french soldier back from france to germany. The story tells that it was taken from paul Mauser personal collection.

very early repeating rifle, must be a by-product of the mauser's attempt to build a working military rifle with tubular magazin. since the advent of the Fruwirth carbine http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat....true#Post249526
there were many trials to find the new big thing. would be interesting to see if the tubular magazin was made like the Kropatschek.
there is a strong connection between Alfred Ritter von Kropatschek and the Mauser brothers in this time when Kropatschek use the Mauser 71 receiver and Mauser use the Kropatschek tubular magazine for the Mauser 71/84 and the Kropatschek M 1886.

You can sure see the lineage of the style from the earlier German muzzleloaders to the modern cartridge rifles to the time.
