318 Westlet Richards barrel profile ?
      #287320 - 03/09/16 11:35 AM

What would you all think of as the best barrel profile for a 318 WR. The barrel is going to be a one off so wont have to stick with factory profiles. I will be stocking the rifle as iron sights only so I have taken that into account when putting together a proposed profile
Starting with the Kreiger page and the #3 medium sporter with these changes
Finished at 25 inches
.570 at the muzzle ie .120 either side over groove dia this will keep it from being muzzle heavy but have enough to hang nicely in hand
I would reduce the neck dia (G) to .815 and all up this should keep the finished weight just under the 3 lb mark to keep the rifle nice and portable but still have the weight where it will enhance the handling.

My opinion for what it's worth after carrying rifles for hours that are just that little bit too heavy, is go light. I built myself a lovely .404 on a Brno 602 single bridge action, unfortunately I made it too heavy and it is a pig to carry on extended hunts. I just used a standard sporter barrel, as I thought it would be the better option.
Since building the .404 I have handled a couple of Mauser's an 8mm, 9.3x62 & another .404, all these rifles were very light compared to my .404 and it was a delight to hold them and I know to carry and hunt with these would be a dream compared to what I own. My .338 WM that I use and love could also be that 1/2 lb lighter as it weighs 9.2lb scoped. I also own a .500 NE and it weighs up into the 11lb range and is also a bit heavy after a days hunting, but I'll put up with this one
I intend to, after I finish my enfield sporter in .303/25 to build another .404 on a standard length 98 and either a .318 WR or .338WM again on a 98. Both of these will be light, not featherweight but pretty light all the same so I can carry it with ease. I'm not at all concerned about any added recoil, when your hunting you only take a couple of shots and I don't really feel the recoil hunting, just like almost everyone.
So personally I'd go the light sporter for the reasons above, and 8.5lb all up weight to be about optimum for a rifle that will get carried a fair bit.
What action do you plan to use?
Anyway good luck with the build.

The guy it is being built for has shown a preference for a slightly heavier barrel than I sugested but it is his rifle so that is what it will get.
Going to follow this style

With these dimensions

Will be building it on an FN action

G'Day Fella's,

Von Gruff, Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Donuts!

last week, I sent some images to Ripp, of a restored original WR repeating rifle, in .318 WR Accelerated Express.
Unfortunately this rifle is no longer in my safe, so I can't go measure it up!
Bugger! Von Gruff, how about I email you the same details?

Regards
Homer

Looking forward to see the progress, will start a similar project in a couple of months. I'm also planing on using a FN action, a Walther barrel and a beautiful piece of exhibition grade Turkish walnut.

Planing to follow the lines of a original WR building a light weight rifle.

Any more info would be appreciated.

Regards,

My aproach is different.
Here the Oberndorf action for ,318 . Small radius cut in the front ring. Magazine box 88 mm long
(Standard is 84 mm).
Made 1924 Large ring but small threaded.
All the furniture Type A.
The same action used for 30-06.
Will it be a .318 again. No will become 30-06.
The same old history but a better future.
