Kimber?
      #286250 - 09/08/16 03:32 PM

Are they worthwhile as a rifle to use? What sort of name do they have.
They read well,at least the 8400 classic does seem to.

I have more experience with their handguns vs rifles..however my wife has one in .308..thin barrel, walnut stock...and its a shooter...shoots factory ammo all day long under a 1" at 100 yards...she has taken a few elk with it now as well as a deer or two...

The people I talk to at the local gun shop have had good result with them...
Kimber just come out with a less expensive model this year called the HUNTER..

http://www.kimberamerica.com/hunter?___SID=U

Just read a report on this last week..shot really well..

From what I have known through the years, think at one point there may have been some quality control issues..but not the case now from what I read, hear and experience. I really like the handguns..between my wife and I we have numerous models..all work and shoot very well..

They look good but I have a friend with a Gunshop he said he wouldn't own anything kimber but we were talking 1911 pistols though.

One of the complaints I hear about them is price..another is that the aluminum does not hold up on the 1911's..I have never had an issue with either..personally think they are the best deal on the market considering what you get..and how they shoot..all the .45's I have are incredibly accurate..and I have found them to be very reliable...ever..but I do shoot and practice more with my glocks as I take them to shooting school and travel with them in my car fairly often..

I hear little things off and on all the time..it seems some like to form an opinion and keep it..other just seem to have a hard-on for Kimber..each to their own..I like mine..

I'm a confessed Kimber hater, handguns are my area of experience with them. I owned a couple of 1911s and have nothing positive to say about them.

As for rifles, I know that my local barrel maker rebarrels lots of Kimbers due to poor accuracy or other issues..

I'm going to agree with Ripp; I have three Kimber 1911's, one stainless and two aluminum frames. The ultra combat I carry every day and have put thousands of rounds through it. Some years ago I spoke with a custom pistol smith, his comments were "You can take a $1000's worth of parts and put a $1000 in labor into it and they will not shoot any better than a Kimber out of the box". My Stainless I converted to a 45 super and carry it when bow hunting in bear country. I have had no experience with their rifles.

I think that is what you are going to find on here..there is another guy in your neck of the woods who is on here off and on..I know he purchased a Kimber in 280AI--posted on here that he was very happy with it.. so, hoping he will see this and chime in..

My experience and what I have heard on the rifles in mixed as well..my wife's shoots very well..as does my friend Troy's who has the Caprivi model in 375H&H...I know some had accuracy issues back some years ago..the gun shop guy I talked to, who has become a friend of mine, says they are having good luck with them now...

What you thinking about getting???

I was looking at the 8400 classic Ripp.
I like the wood in them.

That is the model my wife has...nice gun...

BTW--my same friend at the local gun shop ironically called today stating they got in the new Kimber K6 DA only revolver..will be able to give you a more thorough report once I go pick it up..shot one at the demo days a couple weeks ago. Great shooting DA only revolver..extremely smooth trigger pull..

Stopped in Sportsmans Warehouse today for some ammo. The gun manager who I have known for about 20 years was behind the counter so I visited with him for a bit about some of the new guns they had on the shelf. Saw they had the a Hunter model from Kimber there.. Asked him what he thought about them..he owns 5 total and said he is very happy with all of them...for what its worth, that was his comments...

From many sources in the gun world I have heard that at best they are a crap shoot and that factory support is next to non existant. Inconsistency in accuracy and simplified design to reach price point.
The first generation of Kimbers from the 1980s were well made semi custom rifles. My Super America model 82, 22lr is superb and keeps up with my Anschutz 1422D for accuracy. The SA model 89 was also very nice with integral scope bases. The African in .416 Rigby was their finest DGR.
Today's Kimbers compare to the Winchester super grade without the cheek-piece and wrap around checkering. Yes they may be hand checkered but nothing to brag about.
There are several reviews, on line, of people who own the current models 84,8400 that will give you a sense of whether it's the right rifle for you.
As for me nothing comes close to a Browning FN.

G'Day Fella's,

Gryphon, I own an 84L Montana in .25-06 and I'm totally happy and very impressed with it!
It is probably the only rifle that I have owned, that I've not yet pulled apart.
I'm happy with the trigger pull as is (but I will lighten it eventually) and it shoots 5/8", 5 x shot groups, out of the box (with handloads to suit it).
Though I'm not a fan of them (I prefer Tang Safeties), the three position Wing Safety work perfectly (as opposed to many M70 one's, that don't).
Between a couple of my mates, we have a total of 7 current Kimber's (in .223, my .25-06, 7-08, .308, 280AI, all Montana's), a .308 Mtn Assent and a .375 H&H Talkeetna, and they all function without fault and shoot very fine (read> Small Groups).
When I get a chance (to many firearm projects), I will get another Montana or Mtn Assent, probably in .270WSM and a Caprivi, in .375 H&H.

Hope that helps

Doh!

I had heard there were some issues with some but that was years ago..all I have heard or talked to including some pretty good friends are telling me the exact same thing..shoot really well and are very happy with them..including one of my best friends Caprivi in .375H&H..who I hunt all over the planet with...

Have no dog in this fight, merely stating what "I" see and hear...plus as I stated my wife has a wood stocked .308 that shoots as good with factory ammo as any gun I have ever owned. That impresses me quite a bit..

BTY Homer..--NICE Signature line...

BTW--I did pick this guy up a few days ago..as I told another friend, the smoothest DAO factory revolver I have ever shot...and amazingly accurate...been shooting mostly 38spcl in it but going to work on some .357 Mag loads with it next..

Has an incredible half lock which enable you to shoot almost like a single action..also has a drift rear sight you don't see every day..all the edges are very well polished for a no snag draw...

Was told this is 1 of the first 100 to leave the factory but the local Kimber rep.

Very pleased at this point...
