Russians on safari
      #28603 - 30/03/05 12:17 PM

We hear more and more about Russians on safari in Africa often with a armload of lovelies perhaps paid by the hour.

I wonder are these fellows from the Russian mafia or organised crime. I know there are a lot of wealthy people in Russia nowadays but I always suspect the source of their wealth which seems to have been two shekels one year and five hundred million dollars the next. Maybe I am stereotyping ...

Open for discussion. If any outfitters or PHs don't want to post it in their name they are welcome to PM me and I will post it under my own as a confidential quotation.

(edited to change the title)

I will take the liberty of posting a story 2nd hand.

A Russian named Ivan went hunting in Africa and took his rental lady with him. During the hunt, they moved from one remote camp to another by boat. After the boat ride, the lady was tired so she stayed in camp.

So Ivan and the PH hopped in a boat and went about 40KM upriver looking for a suitable croc. But the boat motor was terminal, so they had to row back. By the time it was alsmost dark they were still 10km from the camp, and Ivan said he was going no further. So the PH and Ivan went to a native kraal to sleep for the night.

At the kraal, Ivan said he wanted his cigars and vodka. So the PH told two teenage native boys (who were in their native state of nakedness) to run to the camp and fetch the cigars and vodka. The boys complied, but when they got to the cabin, the Russian rental lady was in there clipping her toenails with a small pair of scissors. Seeing the unclothed natives, she thought they were interested in utilizing her services gratis, so she tried to stab them with her nail clipping scissors. The boys being very agile, they grabbed the vodka and cigars and took off, delivered them to Ivan in the kraal so that he could enjoy his evening.

I understand this to be a true story.

Dan

One thing you always hear about Russians on safari is their love of vodka and copious quantities too.

Although stereotyping is a risk when discussing this subject, I'm pretty sure that the majority of very wealthy Russians have gotten their wealth by dubious means.

A Russian toast to friendship.

"Cheers to Friendship"

Once upon a time, a pack of wolves lived in the forest. Their leader was very old. One day, when the pack was going for hunting, the leader said he was not capable of leading them. A young strong wolf approached the leader and asked him to allow him to lead the pack.

The old wolf agreed, and the pack went to seek food.

In a day the wolves returned with prey. The young wolf told the leader that they attacked the seven hunters and easily killed the men.

Time came for the pack to go hunt again, and the young wolf took the lead. The wolves did not return for a long time, and then the wounded young wolf cam home alone. He told the leader that the pack attacked the three men, and only one young wolf survived.

The old wolf exclaimed in surprise, "But during the first hunt you killed the seven hunters, and they did no harm to you!"

The young wolf replied, "There were 7 hunters at our first hunt, but this time there were three best friends".

Cheers to friendship!

My half brother is from aristocratic russian descent. He is more than fluent in Russian and is job is collecting intelligence datas.
He is knowing more than he will ever say about the Russian new Rich. These people aren't coming from the blue... but from the red.
They were red kulaks, nomenklatura boys or related to ex-KGB.
During the communist period plenty were midle managers or senior executives and from one day to the next they became owner of the firms they were managing.
Others were powerful state employees (secret service, police or army)n and thanks to their power took hold of monopoles, by a ruse, by co-option and by force.
The vodka-drinker cliché is not false but the main trait is that they are merciless and determined.

What is the first rifle You display?
Makes me think of a Czech with a "splendid" (depends on your own taste) 500 NE Blaser Express, whom I hunted with last year in Africa.

JB

Decided to edit the titles of this thread. I think it was a little rude to Russian hunters.

Ex-apparatchiks is probably quite right.

The hard drinking reputation is also held by Aussies. My first PH's experience with Australian clients were some very rough miners from some mine in Northern Zambia. They were there to kill animals and drink very copious quantities of beer.

Myself I drank coke. And some Zim wine .

The rifle is a Russian rifle is a Berkut model from KBP and the following information is provided.:
