heavy black powder load
      #285053 - 11/07/16 12:33 PM

So I've been playing around with loads for my 45-120 highwall decided to try some black powder.made a drop tube.dropped cigarette rolling paper wad over the flash hole dropped 120grs of 3f squeezed a 535gr round nose over the top. Fired about 5 of them figured it was kicking pretty good.allways thought the gun was a little light so weighed it just under 9lbs. So the question is how does that stack up to a nitro express round.or a 500 Jeffery

That charge, from a 30" bl.should make about 1,450fps, maybe 1,500fps. It is about 700fps short of the NE. Rounds
It is probably making about 33,000 to 35,00PSI.

Then I'm on track power wise not something I could shoot all day without a recoil pad but not terrible.i wanted the gun to be a little light so I could carry it without need a gun carriage this fall for black bear.

It'll work on BoBo, as well as everything else in N.A.
In my own .45x3-1/4", 2F was more accurate.
In your rifle, 62.0 gr. Re#7 + 300gr. Nosler will do wonders on everything here as well. That ran 2,200fps in my brother's Sharps & did well on a 2 yr. old bull moose. It would clover leaf at 100 meters for 3 shots using apertures. Needs a backer-rod filler.

Hey - missed seeing your post - was away for a while oon a week 1/2 road trip around the Province.

In RCBS cases with the patched undersized bullets - .451" WITH the paper patch, I used 116gr. 2F, a grease cookie and thin /-3-|" fiber wad. I used a disk of wax paper between the powder (compressed 1/10" with a home made powder compression die), then the thin card and then the patched bullet pushed in to the slightly sized case with my fingers.
I rubbed BP lube into the paper as well, but a spray with moly would also work.

In Bell cases, same loading scenario but with 122gr. 2F GOEX.

I got the idea of loading undersized bullets patched to the bore diameter from a book written by the late Paul Mathews (passed away Sept 2015). The book was called "The Paper Jacket". It works using soft bullets. 30:1 - tin to lead or 40:1, tin to lead. 2/3rds PB, 1/3 WW (crimp-on lead/antimony) also works.
