I just received this Rigby last Friday and shot it yesterday for the first time.
Many thanks to a member who put me on the trail to get it. Lots of pics, ask and I can take shots
of what you would like to see.

That is a great looking rifle. Congratulations.

I haven't seen that type of stalking safety before.

Cheers, Chris

Now that is just a sweet-looking rifle--thanks for sharing the pictures!

Rockdoc, that stalking safety shows up on a few of the percussion bar locks. From the interior pictures I've seen, that was the only place they could fit them.

That is a truly great hammer double in a very usable caliber. This is what I picture when I hear the term crisp condition. You did very well, no matter the price. Looks like it is accurate too. Be sure to share the pictures when you first use it on game. Bob

This gun weighs 9 lbs even. Paul Robert writes the following in his letter of Certification:

The records from Rigby state that this was made in 1869 as "best center fire double rifle".
for a Mr. M Coates for the sum of 52 pounds 10 shillings. 52 bore

Just 4 years after the end of our Civil War John Rigby made this center fire cartridge gun in 450
BPE 3 1/4 inch case.

The Trapdoor Springfield and the Colt Single Action Armies were both designed in 1873.

Winchester was making the 1866 lever guns and Mauser was making the 1871 bolt action in 43 Mauser.

The Mauser 1871 has not made the transition to the tube magazine 1884 modification yet.

Correct me if I am wrong on these historical moments in time, I just want to focus on this gun that
was designed and built in 1869 per Rigby's records and bring your mind forward 147 years to today when I can shoot and enjoy this timeless treasure. I must preserve it and prepare to pass it on.

VERY VERY VERY VERY nice rifle in VERY VERY good condition

Most interesting, classically early, non rebounding bolted locks, flat hammers and "side" locks, lovely fences - excellent

It may even have been used with foil wrapped cartridges, see Hoyem p 78

TH44

edit: I am not trying to tell you how to suck eggs but magnum primers are essential with 4198 especially with such a long case

What can you hunt in Hawaii? Would be a very classy pig rifle.

This is what it is all about, keeping all these old pieces going & the loads/components to do so for generations still to come. You're just part of that fine old rifle's history, I hope your kids & grandkids get to enjoy it as much as you obviously are now!
Bloody envious old mate!

Very glad to see this rifle has made it's new owner happy. The rifle came out of an extraordinary collection of British black powder rifles. There are a few more special pieces in this collection. Contact me for more information.

Congratulations on the acquisition of a very nice rifle! The styling is very advanced for 1869. If it wasn't for the wedge fastened forearm, this rifle could have been built 30 years later.

Regards,

Jim

Utilizing the Greenhill formula to obtain the optimum twist rate for the: length, diameter, velocity
and specific gravity (I used lead), gave 38.8 inch twist rate.
