"London Best" Rigby again in .350 Rigby Magnum
      #284200 - 21/06/16 04:34 AM

From Rigby:
Ready to salivate? We are extremely proud of this .350 Magnum that has just been completed for a customer. It has a 24" stepped barrel with integral rib on the chamber section and iron sights zeroed to 65, 150 and 250 yards. This understated beauty has grade 10 deluxe walnut, Rigby half scroll and white gold inlay. Delicately contrasting, the colour hardened magazine box, floor plate, Holland pattern scope mounts, safety, grip cap and recoil bar add some real character to this best London gun. This is the first .350 Magnum to be completed since our return to London and we think we have got it just about right. A big thank you as always to the boys in the Rigby workshop.

The rib is an exact copy of the pre-war design. Often used for the early scope mounts found on guns of that period.

This one was Ģ27k with the case, scope and mounts

Very cool to see the .350 Rigby Magnum again. I have a friend with two Rigby's a .275 and a .350 which have never been fired. He purchased them from the original owner on the condition they stayed mint.

Seriously I would have no hesitation after my big lotto win in putting in my order for several Rigby rifles.

Interesting to compare to Karen Blixen's .350 Rigby elsewhere on NE.

Classic or no classic, give me the Win type safety mechanism any day over the clunker typre.

Would anyone having a custom built bolt A request the original Mauser clunker?

I much prefer this rifle to the Shakar rifle. If only I could afford such a gun.

Well, it's a bloody nice rifle, with all the bells and whistles. Unfortunately the stockmaker has shown a complete lack of artistic flair with that cheekpiece, it's a shocker. It looks like a loaf of bread hanging off the side rather than a pancake.
Sorry, but it lets the whole piece down for me.
Metal.

I have to say that this 350 Rigby has always impressed me with its simplicity and elegance with visual balance that is simply superb

The featured rifle seems to have just a touch heavier forearm than the Karen Blixens rifle but it really does have a gorgeous piece of walnut (although like metal, I think that the cheekpiece is a little on the large size especially at the front)

One thing I never get used to on the Rigby rifle is the way the foresight ends abruptly back some distance from the muzzle. I much prefer the Mauser sleeved ramp style of foresight ending neatly at the muzzle.

Now I could quite happily own and use that beauty that Von Gruff has featured.

Different rifles for different customers. The old rifles were mostly an off the shelf pattern (?). These modern custom rifles were made to customer specifications.

Von Gruff,

Thanks for posting the photos of my .350 Rigby Magnum. Lon Paul put it together using an original Rigby Magnum action with a stepped receiver ring and slant box magazine plus an original Rigby stock. It is the pride of my gun room.

Quite different stocking on these two rifles, Blixen's and XAUSA's. XAUSA's stock seems thinner overall, the fore-end definitely so. And shorter in the fore-end. XAUSA, do you know from what rifle the stock came from ie a Rigby what?

I like all three rifles. Whether a vintage one, as long it was in reasonable condition especially the barrel, or a modern one. For me, plain and without much ornamation. I like the Blixen rifle especially but not its "busy" top of action.

At one time I seriously thought about the .350 Rigby as the calibre of choice for my "Tiger" rifle never ending saga. But for some reason, I just don't like the .358 calibre. Who knows, feelings can change.

Here is another example of an early 350 Rigby. It is Lon Paul's personal rifle that he carried on a bear hunt with me and used to stop a large wounded bear as it was about to escape. Above it is my Enfield 9.3x62 that I was modified by Lon.

There are subtle differences in virtually all the old Rigbys as they were built by hand and often were special ordered. So are the new Rigbys, so it is not surprising to find some differences. But all the newer ones I have seen and handled were noticiably meatier than the old ones.

I do like those two rifles Phil.

A question, the rifles you handled, ie the new ones, were they all the standard "Big Game" model? Which is a different style of rifle to the one featured in this thread. The standard off the shelf "Big Game" model is not meant to, and does not replicate the vintage design

What do people think of the mount bases. On one hand a consideration might be how easy is the rifle be to top feed? But I don't think it would be a serious impediment especially if the owner/user was used to his rifle and used it enough. A scope in place on any rifle would be more an impediment. I think the customer wanted the Rigby "signage" to be still visible.

I do like that it cleans up the top of the action. And compared to the chunky bases on the Blixen rifle, allows a better sight picture.

I do like the old pop up peep sights on the old rifles, which no doubt would be possible if ordered that way.

.350 Rigby Magnum - rechambered to .375H&H

The way it should be done , if you like to come close to the original Rigby.
The square part over the barrel is not a "shortened" rib, but intended to accept tha front mounting base.

If it is made in that way you have free look on the front receiver ring (and markings).

I personally donīt like the clumsy looking H&H mounting, espacially on a Rigby.
