28" 1910?

I had the opportunity to handle a relic from better hunting days in East Africa, a 1910 model made for Charles Heyer & Co. in Nairobi before WWII. Take-down, four folding leaves sight (100 fixed, 200, 300, 400 and 500 folding).

That particular lady has a 28" barrel. I was almost expecting to find a fishing line and hook hidden somewhere in the forend...

Was such a long barrel common?

Not common, but such nonstandard barrel lenghts up to 28" were available on special order and extra cost. So were carbine length, 20" barrels on half stocked rifles, barrels made of rust resistant Boehler "Antinit" steel and ribbed barrels.

That sounds almost exactly like mine except that mine is a 1903, which also has been retailed by Charles Heyer & Co and also with a 28" (27.5" actually) barrel:
