Cleaning a double question
      #283686 - 10/06/16 06:24 AM

So here's a question that I've had for some time but was afraid to ask:

With my more pedestrian rifles, I normally run a patch through the bore(s) with solvent, then I will insert a chamber plug and fill the bore with Butches Bore Shine, seal the muzzles with Saran Wrap and an elastic band to prevent evaporation, then let the chemicals soak and remove the copper fouling over the course of 4 days or so. After pouring out the solvent, several oil soaked patches nicely finishes the job. This works absolutely wonderfully for bolt guns etc, but is it safe to do with multi barrel firearms where there are soft solder joins between the barrels? Would the solvent weaken or erode the solder? I have erred on the side of caution with my expensive doubles, and have not done the soak routine, but I find that copper fouling never really comes out of a bore unless one soaks or unless one scrubs it to death.....

So how do others clean? Any soakers out there? Anyone worried about the barrel join material?

Any and all opinions / commentary would be most welcome!!!

Many thanks,

Postman

I have been trying to find something that will work on copper fouling. I have a couple of rifles that copper foul badly. So far I haven't found anything that works as advertised. I may have to try your method.

Guys I clean my double with KG12 after I get the carbon out. I will make a video one day soon of the copper being lifted out of the barrel in about 3 minutes. KG12 leaves the opposition for dead and you don't need to scrub much or fill the barrel with solvent over night.

Who makes KG12. Is it available every where.

Me too. After 37 years best I have found. Oil gun with Ballistol.

Cheers. Chris

So the million dollar question remains:

Will various barrel solvents attack or otherwise compromise the integrity of the barrel join solder? Not being a builder, I don't even know if it is copper pipe plumbers solder, silver solder, or a brazing rod that is used in the barrel joins, so I'm fairly ignorant wrt to the exposure of same to the various solvents......

I've been using for years on my drilling and it's got more barrel soldering than any double. No sign of attack.
