Practice shooting many rounds with a double - is it ok?
      #283360 - 04/06/16 08:37 AM

Perhaps a stupid question, but please give me some experiences and advice on this topic.

I have a o/u Chapuis double rifle and have been working up a load for practice with fmj bullets.

Is it safe to shoot e.g. 4 rounds within 30-60 seconds, with regard to the soldered barrels? I'm aware of that point of impact might change a bit, but is there any risk that the regulation will be lost if I shoot that fast, due to the increased heat in the barrels?

The main reason i ask is that we practice regularily on running targets before the moose hunting season, and also do a mandatory test that involves 4 rounds each time. To be approved, you need to make that test with good results at least three times. My plan is to wait about 10-20 minutes between every 4-shot series, to let the barrels cool down. Would that be ok?

Sounds fine. That is what they are made for.

I have found I need a gloved left hand with splinter forends after a couple of shots with a 500N, and a couple more with a 450!

I can tell you, I have done more and faster than that at some double rifle shoots.
I never thought it to be a problem but the barrels do get pretty darn hot - too hot to wrap your hand around, that's for sure.
Normally, doubles are heated to high temps when regulating and I don't know if they are allowed to completely cool between pairs. The heat to melt the solder is way higher than rapid shooting will produce so my bet is that it's just fine.

At BGRC (Big Game Rifle Club) shoots doubles are often shot multiple times in short time periods.

On feral animal hunts I often shoot my rifle many times in very short time periods.

Maaaaate,

If you can shoot enough rounds from your double in a short enough time to melt the solder, you're getting just about enough practice.
