Looking for opinions on the Browning A Bolt Hunter
      #282449 - 16/05/16 12:03 AM

For many years, I hunted pigs with an old Savage-Stevens double shotgun (smoothbore) and slugs. I like how they work when you stalk within 40 - 50 yards. I am considering buying the Browning A Bolt Hunter, rifled bolt action shotgun. We have plenty of opportunities for shooting pigs in rural Brazoria County, where I live. I'd appreciate any opinion from someone who owns or shoots one, since I have not been able to find one anywhere. I will need to order one, hence the request.

Best wishes, and good hunting!

When you do let rip with a few pics of the pigs too.

Are they Javelina`s or wild boar?

Mehul:
Most modern bolt-action shotguns are designed to shoot discarding sabot projectiles accurately, rather than slugs.

Maybe the Browning will shoot slugs just fine, but perhaps that is the question you need answered first.

That IS a nice rifle - the Browning. I've been drooling over one at the local Wholesale Sports. The only think wholesale about the place is the name.

They've had that rifle for 3 or 4 years, ever since they opened. It was priced at $795.99 when they opened, and now they've raised the price to $1,299.00.

I offered to buy it last year, at the original price -ie": $800.00 and they would not budge a dollar - so - it's still on the rack, all nice and lovely.

I should note that my Mossberg 835 24" rifled barrel just about stacks 1oz. 3" WW Foster slugs (1,740fps)at 30yards. Five shots offhand ran a group 1 1/2" C to C at 30yards.

I post far fewer pics on social media these days than I used to, because I have a daughter, and don't want her targeted like some young women hunters have been. I'll happily send pics (after hunting) to friends on email, though. Will happily send you pics.

The pigs here in Brazoria County are feral pigs, mostly runaways from farms. We can hunt them year round, and there is no limit. Lots of new game processing centers (fancy names for little one room butcher shops ) have also come up along Hwy 6 towards Angleton as Texans take the invaders on. Farms will allow you to shoot all the pigs you can at $ 100 to 150 a day.

From what I understand, Javelina are found away from the coastal areas, not close to where I live. This is feral pig, and gator territory.

Thank you, Marrakai. I'll be honest, I've never shot a sabot, ever. We couldn't even get them in India, when I lived there, and we had to make do with what was available. Over here, I use my shotguns for pheasants, once a year, when friends come from India to hunt with me, and I use a rifle or a muzzleloader for everything else. I do like going close and hitting pigs with slugs, though. That's how I learned to shoot pigs, and this old dog doesn't learn new tricks easily.

I still haven't found a single store with an A Bolt rifled shotgun, and that is why I'm asking these questions. That said, Browning do make good guns, and I might be overcautious . . .

Thank you, Daryl! Yes, I've read reviews that said that Browning killed the A Bolt rifled shotgun off, but that demand forced them to bring it back. However, the only review that I've read, was on Real Guns, though that is a very respectable website.

I guess I'll just order one at my local Cabelas. They give the best prices these days, and will beat any online price that you can find anywhere.
