A dangerous Nile crocodile has been captured alive in Florida's Everglades National Park after a two year hunt.

Wildlife officials believe the five-and-a-half-foot killer may be the same one that escaped from a Miami-Dade facility and had eluded them for almost two years.

The African species grows up to 20-feet-long, can weigh as much as 2,000lb, and is much more aggressive than the smaller American crocodile, which is shy of humans and rarely seen.

Juvenile: This Nile crocodile was captured on Sunday in Florida's Everglades National Park

The Nile crocodile is thought to be responsible for 275 to 745 attacks on people a year, most of them fatal, making it the third-most dangerous species in Africa, after the lion and hippopotamus, according to the Crocodile Specialist Group of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

'They get big. They're vicious. The animals are just more aggressive and they learn that humans are easy targets,' said Joe Wasilewski, a reptile expert and veteran wrangler. The American croc 'is a gentle animal, believe it or not. That's their nature. They're more fish eaters. They don't consider humans a prey source.'

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino says they believe the Nile croc may have escaped from a facility in Miami-Dade County. He says they're looking at DNA to confirm their suspicions.

Allowing Nile crocodiles to escape into the wild is a third-degree misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $500 and jail time of up to six months.
Prevention: Florida has more invasive amphibians and reptiles than anywhere else in the world, and the Everglades' delicate ecosystem has already been overrun by Burmese pythons, so authorities are eager to prevent the same problem with Nile crocs

Prevention: Florida has more invasive amphibians and reptiles than anywhere else in the world, and the Everglades' delicate ecosystem has already been overrun by Burmese pythons, so authorities are eager to prevent the same problem with Nile crocs

The croc was spotted last week by volunteers with the Swamp Apes, a team that searches for invasive Burmese pythons, reports the Miami Herald, but before that hadn't been seen since April 2012.

Two days later, a team of volunteers used nets to corner the crocodile in a canal in the Chekika area in the northeast corner of the park then tranquilized it.

The croc was taken to the Everglades Alligator farm in Homestead, where it will remain while officials determine its fate.

Crocodiles have been around for more than 200 million years. The average lifespan of a Nile crocodile is about 45 years, but can be much longer in captivity.

It's not unusual for Nile crocodiles to kill huge prey such as young hippopotamuses, giraffes, lions, buffalo, and on rare occasions, humans."

This the third one found and all related.

(CNN)There may be a deadly new invasive species lurking in Florida's swamps.

A team of scientists has identified three reptiles captured near Miami as Nile crocodiles, a species native to Africa.

Through DNA testing, scientists from the University of Florida were able to confirm that the reptiles captured in the wild from 2009, 2011 and 2014 were Nile crocodiles, the second-largest extant reptile species in the world. The findings were published in the journal of Herpetological Conservation and Biology in April.

The study could mean that more of these man-eating creatures are lingering in the Sunshine State.

"The odds that the few of us who study Florida reptiles have found all of the Nile crocs out there is probably unlikely," Kenneth Krysko, herpetology collections manager at the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida, said in a statement.

"We know that they can survive in the Florida wilderness for numerous years, we know that they grow quickly here and we know their behavior in their native range, and there is no reason to suggest that would change here in Florida."

Nile crocodiles have a dangerous reputation in their native homeland. Between 2010 and 2014, they were responsible for about 480 attacks on people and 123 fatalities in Africa. In comparison, in 2015, there were 98 unprovoked shark attacks worldwide and six deaths, according to a report by the International Shark Attack File.

These crocodiles can grow up to 18 feet long and weigh as much as a small car.

Genetic testing revealed the three Nile crocodiles were related, which means they may have come from the same source. And their DNA most closely matched Nile crocodiles from South Africa.

Matthew Shirley, a former University of Florida doctoral student and study co-author, took DNA samples of Nile crocodiles across U.S. zoos and compared those samples with the Nile crocodiles from the Miami area. The DNA did not match, and the source of these reptiles remains unknown.

Scientists noted in the study that in the last decade large quantities of Nile crocodiles have been imported from countries such as South Africa and Madagascar. These crocodiles have been put on display at places such as Disney's Animal Kingdom in Florida.

But it's likely that Florida's exotic pet trade has introduced these creatures into the wild, according to researchers.

In recent years, several invasive species such as the Cuban tree frog and a variety of snakes from around the world have flourished in Florida, according to the National Park Service. Some have wreaked havoc on the state's ecosystem, causing officials to take action.

For example, the invasion of the Burmese python, the largest snake species in the world, has prompted an annual hunting competition to mitigate the snake's population.

Florida has the world's largest number of invasive species, primarily because of its subtropical climate, according to scientists.

"My hope as a biologist is that the introduction of Nile crocodiles in Florida opens everyone's eyes to the problem of invasive species that we have here in our state," Krysko said. "Now here's another one, but this time it isn't just a tiny house gecko from Africa."

Since Nile crocodiles are generalist predators, everything from birds, mammals to even the state's native crocodiles and alligators are at risk of becoming this creature's next meal.

Krysko said he hopes the new findings will be a wake-up call for Floridians.

I wouldn't mind a hippo outbreak. I could try out my 416 Rigby or my 450/400x3 Manton.

Croc attacking a baby hippo normally has a death wish. Mother hippos push their young into the midst of the croc's and the croc's normally don't touch them. Even 16 footer can easily be killed by a hippo. This from watching documentary's on the croc and hippo.

I doubt the low figures quoted for croc attacks and human deaths. You never hear of croc, or any other large animal, attacks from villagers until you spend time there. They will tell you no problem here!

Some places they would say the crocs were friendly - lots of superstition and witchcraft around animal human attacks. We walked in a river for a few days until we got down to where the crocs were, where the crocs started were a few little devices fixed to the stone riverbank in a couple of spots, part of witchcraft. I think that was site of a croc attack, but could not get a clear answer. Nearby village we hired an armed game scout from, one of two we used as I knew the area contained at least 4 of the big five, there was a little girl killed by a buff and a drunk on a bicycle killed by an elephant one night (never got the details) in the six months prior to our arrival, yet we were told none of this when we first visited to say we would be be working in the area and asked directly about local wildlife.
