This is in south west Sweden, usally they get 20-30 pcs everytime they hunt. This day the weather was a little different so we saw about 2000 birds 500 meters away sitting in the fields. No chance to approach so we went home empty handed.

From your photos looks like fun but cold.

What species are these geese - the same as the North American geese?

Tell more if you will about goose hunting - bag limits, seasons etc.

John

We call them Canaidan Geese and they are a pest. On the right day you can see thousands and thousands of them in the fields.

So the only limit is your trailer size and the open season were you can use decoys and callers are almost half the year, the rest of the year you can hunt them to protect your farming.

Mostly hunted with shotgun but also as stalking with some of the 22-222 calibers.

Then we have other sorts of geese that are much more protacted and rare.

I quite like eating goose.

Here we can hunt magpie geese in the Northern Territory. Only a few years ago there was no bag limit but limits were rightly introduced as often with no bag limits people get a little silly and waste the birds. Haven't hunted them but have seen them fly over when hunting and fishing in the Top End in the off season. Have to make a trip one day to have a hunt but getting a decent amount of meat home is a major problem ie at least a four day drive to get home and several thousand kilometres.

Locally we have the Cape Barren goose which once were close to extinct due to overhunting and the draining of swamps to make farmland. I do believe that in some locals they have bred to overpopulation levels but if we ever see them re-added to the open hunting permits we will be lucky (ie a native bird).

A duck sized goose, the maned goose, more commonly known as wood duck can be hunted prettily everywhere. In fact last season the daily bag limit was lifted so it was open, to try to reduce numbers. Then this year, no duck season at all on any species.

I think there are Canada geese in New Zealand and keen duck hunters head East to hunt them.
