nice shotgun for my last college girl
      #281883 - 04/05/16 12:37 PM

My youngest daughter is finishing up her first year of engineering school
With straight a's loves to shoot I bought her a Merkel in 30.06 for her high school grad.not having her own shotgun the time seems fitting.everyone has a favorite shotgun and there's a thousand different kinds.she doesn't mind a kicker but was thinking of an automatic for the engineering aspect.like to keep it under 1500$.I've always been an a5 browning guy but before I buy an a5 or the new a5 sweet sixteen would appreciate some imput.

If you like the A5, there you go. See if she likes them too. If she does buy her a nice original. Stay away from the new guns sold and labeled as an Auto-5. They might be great guns but they're not the same gun. In my area Belgian A5's from the mid 70s in a condition worth buying tend to bring $600-$1000(sweet 16 a bit more, maybe $1200 for a nice example)-well within what you want to spend.

Beretta makes beautiful guns in that price range too, but I'm like you=a big (original)Auto-5 fan.

ducmarc,
get your daughter a double SxS, so she appreciates the work that goes into such an 'old' yet serviceable design.
Hopefully there might be a good lighter weight shotgun out there for here to appreciate that it's not all about just firepower, but that all thing mechanical there are trade offs & design limitations; that way it'll get her mind working & potentially onto bigger & better things - whatever field she may venture into!
Who knows maybe she'll get the double bug & end up working for Rigby or H&H one day!

+1

If not an option I would go Beretta based on what I saw and heard with in Argentina a cple months ago..they withstand more abuse and continue to function far more than any other brand available per the high volume shooting lodges...

I hope your wallet got some 'fat' in it at present..........will be mighty thin afterwards, never a truer statement when it comes to women; they can smell a bargain anywhere!
Mind you, if one of your kids are busting their hump to do something you'll always help them out however you can. Just being a good dad ducmarc!

I think a nice Side by Side too is perfect for a young lady, or maybe under Under and Over. I know I looked at a 20 gauge U and O for a female once. I think it was a Beretta U/O. She didn't want a shotgun, so I didn't get a nice Beretta 20 gauge to use.

If your daughter doesn't mind recoil, then the 12 gauge is more versatile.

I grew up shooting an 16 gauge A5 and was perfectly happy with it until I started shooting skeet with a Browning Superposed. When I went back to the A5 on a duck hunting expedition I was appalled at all the sloshing and clanking of the long recoil mechanism after each shot. I went to a 3" 12 gauge Model 12 Winchester for my duck gun and placed the A5 in well earned retirement.

It had been my grandfather's shotgun and had been in use since the '20's. It was chambered for 65mm shells until I had it converted.

Of course a Merkel O/u might be a match I see them occasionally in the price range plus there's always layaway.

Hard to beat a nice 20 bore Ruger O/U, made in the US of A.
Their 28's are really sweet shooting too - even nicer than the 20 bore.

Yes a sweet sixteen is a model of an a5 browning and it is engraved on the side.
