...unless you wear a Savile Row suit to work, I don't think most of us would consider it a working gun.

It’s a working rifle…as far as my Crockett & Jones shoes are made for walking !
In fact the rifle has benefited from some extras in acknowledgement for our customer patience and confidence.

Do Crockett and Jones make snow pacs ?

Or hip boots ?

I admit it is a stunningly beautiful rifle and one I would certainly want to hunt with but to describe it as a "working rifle" is like Hillary describing herself as one of the working class.

It will be getting used but the owner will treat it as a precision tool and not like a hammer.

I would take both Dorleac's 404 and Hillary out bear hunting in Alaska

Beautiful rifles in the second thread, they look like they are made for the mountains. Not entirely convinced with the one in the first thread though.

I am well aware of the rugged mountainous terrain in Europe and meant no disrespect toward your rifles. They are truly exquisite. I was only questioning your use of the term "working rifle" when describing the 404. I am sure it works but would be surprised to see it "working" for a living . But guess I shouldn't be as I have a friend who guided here in Alaska and carried a Holland & Holland Royal 500 Nitro for many years -- it was a total wreck when he eventually sold it --- and I have even been known to use some of my custom rifles in the garden where I "work"

It is nice to see rifles like that actually being used for the purpose they were intended !

Knowing the owner I'm sure that he will put the rifle to good use.
When I speak about "working rifle" that means that, even if it displays some nice finishing touches, that rifle has been built to be used under any condition.
Wood is an old blank of French walnut from Tessier (from the late 80) and the rifle has been made to work, not for show...as are all our rifles.
In one of the threads about our mountain hunting passion you can see a fine .270W that hunts where many plastic ones will never go. The owner loves it but wants to use and hunt with...it's also a "working rifle".
That said, I dream to hunt in your "garden" !

Best.

A simply gorgeous rifle! And, the owner's patience has been rewarded much as if he would have waited for a fine wine to mature! Congratulations to friend and gun artist, Joel, and to the rifle's owner for his fine taste!

Hope to see pictures and accounts of success with it in the field, in the future!

Certainly a lovely piece of kit! And an original magnum action as well, rather lucky to pick one of those up - will be a treasured piece to pass down to children & grandkids; & it will still be just as good then.
Brilliant work as always!
cheers

There are many many rifles shown off online in various places including here that dont ever get to see the nitty gritty side of what they were made for.

A bit like buying a classic car and reserving it for the garage and used a couple of times a year.

The rifle in this thread is a great thing of beauty and workmanship,if the owner wants it barked up or kept pristine thats for him to decide.

I think most of us (most, not all) are a tad green with envy!

Now if I had the dosh I would have it in the bush in a flash lol!

Looks like a extremely functional working rifle to me. Would be my pleasure to carry that 404 around and get it banged up. There is nothing sadder than seeing any rifle in completely pristine condition and not being used. Every rifle should be a working rifle.

It finaly arrived and it's everything I expected and wanted in a dangerous game rifle, The D&D team have excelled in every way possible, you could not ask for finer rifle.

I have been busy working up loads for the 404 as I am heading off to Africa early November (it's going to be hot, but will take any opportunity to hunt there) for a buffalo & Eland hunt, which the 404 will accompany me.

Thus far no matter what it digest, it shoots extremely well, these are my hand loads, very happy

I want to thank Joel and the D&D team for building me an amazing rifle, one that will accompany me on many trips.

Now to start planning the next rifle, thinking 300 H&H.

Sir,

It was a pleasure to work for a gentleman like you.
I hope that our rifle will serve you in the best manner and I take that opportunity to thank our team, my son Jean-Philippe who worked on the action and the sighting at the range, Pierre who do most of the finish, Stefan who cut the French walnut bed were lies that barrelled Original Magnum Mauser action, Hubert our engraver...and your servant who spend many hours harassing the team before being just satisfied and relaxed in making the mounts and filing the sights and minute details...!

Kind regards from France.

Yep -all of us are envious that you're taking it to Africa
!.
Looks like your load of 85gn of AR2208 mirrors mine as well. I put those over a chrono & got 2320fps average; still had plenty left to go if needed but it shot to my sights & so I left it there.
Looks like she's sighted for longer range or is that just the initial trial run?

I have a few more sessions at the range before I go, I am setting the scope to be dead on at 150, giving me a 2.5" variance along that distance. As I will be chasing Eland it might be a further than anticipated shot.

The sights themselves are dead on at 50, which depending on circumstances I would like to take my buffalo close in without the scope.

Two more sessions at the range and everything will be in order, thank you again for the help with the loads they worked superbly well.

Shame that right group was not a classic four shot group. You would have been even more pleased I'm guessing.
As for next project. Best start on that 7x57 soon as I plan on chasing Stag at "the Hossack" in late March 2018.

It should have been a four shot group, but they were my last three, next time.

I'm coming with you on the red stag hunt, that's for certain.
