New Big Bore, the .435 PH Express
      #28120 - 22/03/05 09:54 AM

Saw this rifle on a website today and thought some of the gentlemen (and ladies) here might be interested. The .435 PH Express.

An extract:-

The .435 PH Express is based on the .375 H&H case. Necking it up to .435 not only makes a practical, efficient round, it also delivers good useable field ballistics without the very high pressures of the .416 Remington. The .435 PH Express can launch a 450 grain bullet at 2,250 FPS, giving us 5,060 Foot Lbs. of energy, and 62.9 Taylor Knockout Value. A 450 grain bullet in .435 caliber has a Sectional Density of .340!

Ho-hum....!!
..but thanks for posting it of course. There are lots of these things around, developed by Wells, Hoffman, Lott et al, all basically the same, all bloody marvellous of course, but one wonders at the motives of a gun-author (as most of them are today) who develops a "new" cartridge with 100-year-old ballistics.

OK, commercial interest other than journalism!

Please tell me why none of the existing dozen or more .400 to .450 cartridges propelling 400 to 500 grain bullets at 2100 to 2400 fps for around 5000 ftlbs muzzle-energy can't do the job!

(Sorry, I saw one too many Fosters beer commercials here in the states)

Nitro, could you post a link - so I can see the rifle and this glorious new cartridge.

This is very interesting because I think the ideal DR cartridge is one that shoots a 400 grain bullet at about 2200 fps, low pressure and rimmed. Why - well it's a bit more powerfull than a .375 but has "acceptable" recoil. We all know that with todays bullets that a 400 grain will kill as well as a 500 grainer. And in my humble opinion, it's bullet weight that contributes most to recoil. That being said, the ideal cartridge in my opinion is the 450/400 3"

There are no practical spaces in the cartridge lineup that are left to fill. The only purpose for a wildcat is to allow the designer to thump his chest. Hey, we all need a little self-regard inflation now and then so I don't begrudge him his fun but any "advantages" he thinks it has over whatever else is out there are purely imaginary. 500 grains (grins?) is right. Whatshisface has designed a belted .404. Whoopee . . .

Hey don't be too tough!

My guess this cartridge was designed prior to Woodleigh making available 450 grain bullets for the .416s.

Also what is wrong with a belted version of the .425 Westley Richards. No one has done that before.

I designed the 435 PH Express because I love big game rifles and wanted to fill a gap. I have owned 416, 450/400, 458, 458lott rifles, plus seen may other calibers take buffalo, and have nothing but praise for each rifle in its correct place. I feel the 435 PH Express will give the best of both worlds, good penetration and good stopping power. Although will have real limitations like everything else. For those knockers our there, please note I am not a big noting person after fame and glory. But a genuine damn good bloke whom would enjoy any descent hunters company around the campfire or in the feild. And yes basically it is a 425WR, of which I do not wish to build, but rather to own a modern version. Take care, Graham.

This is a custom project still in the making... but I was invited to chat on this forum (thanks for your input and vibes). As usual reamers, dies and barrels for new cartridges take ages to get happening. For info on the 435 PH Express go to www.biggameaustralia.com to the products page. Have a great day out hunting, cheers Graham.

Graham

Greatness or originality always has its detracters!

Don't worry about it. The new Holland & Holland .400 Magnum also had a lot of detracters too. One has to develop a thick skin in discussing things on internet forums.

Do you have any specs on the cartridge, like cartridge length, shoulder angles etc?

Where are projectiles and dies available from? (just checked, same calibre as the .425 W-R)

I think an extended magazine a la the . 425 W-R would make the .435 quite a useful rifle.

I wonder how many of us own, have owned or know of someone that has a rifle that started off using a case or projectile that was designed for something else..........

What about all the short magnums or the 22 rimfire cases necked down to 17.
I own a 375 Taylor and a 416 Taylor and even a 308 win that started out as something else...
Hell I even thought of necking down a 308 case to 270 ,6.5 or 25 cal because they fit a standard action...

A rimmed case makes good sense to me.

435PH Express case is 2.850 long, 25' shoulder, .480 neck length. Designed for function and reliability, and is not a hot fat case with minimum neck for more powder as most would expect. Hence people always enjoy shooting cases like 375H&H, 416 Taylor, 404, even 458WM, as they dont kick like hell. The velocity of 2250fps with 450 grainer, or 2350fps with 410 grainer will do the job. I have experienced bullets in some cartridges eventually hammered back into cases, but one will note many of the old fasioned cases have long necks to fully support bullets. Thats one good point about the 458WM and 458Lott being straight walled there is heaps of bullet support.
Reamer, dies being made in USA, organized by Julio Acum gunsmith who is also build a couple of rifles... still coming... not sure of manufacturer but I can chase this up.

Regarding Mag capacity:: We enjoy using CZ / Brno rifles mainly as we can get 5x 375s etc in the magazine, finish is sometimes rough, but everything is steel and they work very well. Very popular with African PHs. In USA they have different stocks, and chambered in some other calibers like 404, 458Lott, 505Gibbs.

Shades of the .400 Holland and Holland, and they also tried to compare it to the .416 Rem, makeing ridiculas claims of pressure problems.

If one has pressure problems with the 416 then he is using the wrong powder or too much of the right powder...Claims of the lower pressure of the 416 Rigby pop up now and then and to this I say, "yes that is true, so what"...The 270, 243, 375 and a host of other calibers operate within the 416 Remingtons range, well duh!!!!

If I was loading for a 416 Rigby then I would be shooting it at about 2800 FPS and utilizing the powder capacity like I do my 404 Jefferys at near 2600 FPS

I load 78 grs. of RL-15 with any bullet in my 416 Rem. and get about 2350 to 2380 on my chronograph, thats 4 grs. below book max and that load had been in Africa many times......Ross Seyfried loaded 82 grs. for his 11 years in Tanzania without a problem...

When someone comes out with a new 40 cal. big bore they always compare it to the 416 Rem much the same as bullet makers compare their wonder bullet to Nosler..The facts are the .435 will never see the light of day, any takers on this for cash????????

Thanks for your opinion Ray.... very helpful..... Personally I think the 416RM, 416Rigby and 404 are all great, and I make no comparisons of pressures hi/lo or otherwise (David mentioned that). However I want a 450grain bullet in 435 dia no matter how much negative vibes get flung.
Re the 416RM, in fact I like the round very much and hope that CZ will make 416RM rifles soon, so I can trade the company CZ 416Rigby when its wears out, as I would prefer 5 in the mag than 4.
Dale Harber of Utah used his 416RM to take a great 103 SCI water buffalo this last season in Arnhemland, and his 3 rounds were well place, but the bull managed to keep on his feet and tried following the herd, until his mate Wayne assisted and flatened it with the 470NE.
We have our Annual Pinjarra Big Game Rifle (field)shoot on this weekend, so will have all sorts of rifles going. The best thing is appreciating and shooting the various finearms and the comradeship.
At last years shoot, during a cape buffalo (target) walk up I was RO (PH!!) and saw a double tap on a 600NE Holland and Holland, that was very interesting, I was ready to catch the gun, but the shooter hung on... somehow. Funny thing was his 'bearer' quickly handed him a 577NE H&H for the next Buffalo, he wiped the blood from his mouth, refocused each eye, and proceeded to the next buff and gave him a perfect brain and heart shot as instructed. Then turned to me and said, "funny.. the 577 kicks heaps less than the 600 !!!!"
Cheers Graham

Nothing personal, this quote is just convienient to illustrate my point...

In reply to:

Well, Jeffery ignored the .425 Westley Richards of 08/09. And then Rigby ignored both WR, and Jeffrey's Cartridges when they came out with thier own .416. (the ballistic twin of the .425WR - so what was the need???)

Remington ignored all three cartridges when it came out with it's own .416 variant. Talk about isolation.

As did Dakota, Lazzeroni, and Weatherby.

Oh, Holland and Holland did too - but they're Holland and Holland.

I'm sure I missed a few things, but I believe my logic is sound:

Whenever we critique someone for introducing a new .400 class cartridge - "Because it offers nothing new ballistically!" - then we must apply those harsh words equally to every .400 class cartridge and gunmaker that introduced a new .400 class cartridge after the .425 WR in 1908.

Ballistically, you are absolutely correct. However, that line of reasoning disregards the Quainte Qlde Brytyshe Customn of propriatory cartridges. Jeffrey couldn't use the .425 because it belonged to Westley Richards. All the same for Rigby. Besides, Rigby had the sole rights to Magnum Length Mausers so it was just good marketing to go with a cartridge that required such things.

Anyway, I hope the inventor has great fun developing loads and has great success on game with his new toy, however redundant the reactionary pukka-sahibs among us may find it.

Wes,

I take it from your post that you agree the .435 whatever offers no advantage over the .404 Jeffery, and is therefore totally redundant and unnecessary.

As for the .425 WR, the feeding problems rule it out. And yes, the .400 HH is needed about as badly as we need windshield wipers on the headlight lenses of Mercedes Benz automobiles.

Totally redundant, yes. But any cartridge created after 1945 or so ballistically falls under the same lable.

I just can't get all negative on people who come out with redundant cartridges. The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned.

And those little wipers sure look trick...

I am finding some of the comments about this particular round to be very petty to say the least.
I find the concept very interesting and may even invest in one !!
How many times has an American reinvented the wheel.
All you have to do is look at a modern reloading manual
to see what I am getting at.
An Australian came up with the idea and has got the balls to follow through on his idea with his own money so I say to you knockers:-

I quite like it.

If all else is equal it will feed more reliably than the 458 Lott.

Easy brass. For me personally the the 416 Remington ties with the 308 as being the most boring calibre out there.

I assume it is essentially a 416 Rem necked up.

Should be be a bit better with powder than a 416 Rem as would be OK with 2208 and also 2206

Mike

Hello Nitrox,

I agree, an extended magazine like the old 425's would be kind of neat! A lot of folks thought that it was ugly but I really liked it. I had a real nice 425 Westley that I took as a partial trade that was in excellent condition.
