Argentina Adventure
      #280729 - 11/04/16 08:33 AM

Just got back from a trip to Argentina with a group of friends. All in all was an o.k. trip..got rained out the last portion. In fact we had to navigate around the flooded and washed out highways to get to the airport..our outfitter told us there was between 800 to 900mm of rain in the past 4 days, depending on the area. I personally have never seen it rain in that in my life..

We did some shooting of birds, fishing and hunting of other game later which did not work out much again because of the rain mostly..few other circumstances as well but that is another story..

Area we were hunting water buffalo in..

My buddy's water buffalo after spotted and a 3 1/2 hour cat and mouse game.

What some of the trails were looking like after the 2nd day of rain..it rained for 3 more days after this was taken...
After day 3 of rain

capybara

Took this large male right at dark sitting on shore...weird little animals..walk like a bear when they are on land...

Some bird hunting--this was 2 hours of shooting wood pigeons...one morning shooting doves I went through 14 boxes of 12 gauge 71/2 shot in about 4 hours of shooting..the birds were thick..

Other morning shooting sessions..

We got in about 2 1/2 hours fishing before wind/rain hit..headed into shore..was a great day of fishing..

I caught several piranha..guide dropped this one accidently while taking out the hook..while trying to get it back out of the boat it took a nip out of his finger..down to the bone..nasty little buggers..

Another friendly looking little guy..

More pics to come--have to gather them up from my friends ..

The casa de estancia Art is so reminiscent of a country Aussie station home.

Thanks for the pictures, Ripp.

The buff are heavily muscled brutes!

They do eat them Daryl..we had some for lunch one day..but the locals collected them all and hung them up in the meat locker..

The area we were at is over run with them..like a p-dog town..IMHO, they need to be seriously thinned out..which I offered the owner to do --think with a good 22-250 you could have a lot of fun for many many days...

The buffalo are big..they have tons of feed to eat..grass there is really thick and lush..so no shortage for the game..It was interesting to see the area, terrain, etc and how many cattle are in that country..or how many cows you can have per acre for that matter..in that area they are running 1 cow/calf pair per 2-3 acres..amazing...as an old farm boy that was incredible to see..

Nice people dealing with and seeing the locals... farms yards are very well kept..nice to see..lots of poverty however in the cities such as Cordoba..one driver to me, yes, you dont want to be poor in Argentina..

Art - back in Ontario when I grew up, most dairy farms were small and right around 70 to 100 acres. They'd milk up to 30 cows and maybe had a couple horses.
That was enough land for grain crops like corn, wheat or barely along with hay fields for the cattle's winter feed and pasture for summer feed.

Daryl
You would never do there here in Montana--low rains and soil content would never allow that..back in N Dakota in the Red River Valley you could..but not here...that is impressive..

Similar to my cousin's ranch (homesteads) in Southern Saskatchewan. The sloughs were about the only source of water, but there were a lot of them in the South (of Moosjaw).
Slough grass was poor, coarse feed though, so they grew and bailed oats for them as well. At one time, in the 60's they had about 3,000 head, on 25 sections.

I am familiar with that area--our family farm was about an hour south of the border from there..similar..based on your figures about- that's around 5.3 acres per cow..would be higher here in Montana--more around 7-8 I believe..been off the farm a llllooonnnggg time but seems about right..

Well that gives true meaning to the Water in the name Water Buffalo.

Fish that bite back like that should be shot, not caught on a line

The pasture there has well above the stocking capacity then where I come from. One head of beef to 5 acres from memory.
