Gibbs .450 Nitro
      #280753 - 12/04/16 05:48 AM

I Have put my hands on a Gibbs double in .458win. The rifle was originally chambered i .450Nitro express but later in the 1970s chambersleeved by Rigby`s into .458win. However I have checked and consulted with a gunsmith( a real one) that it is no problem to recut the chamber back to .450 Nitro.
The .450 Nitro express reamer will clean-up the chamber fine just with a finisher-reamer.
It looks to be a fine gun in overall condition.

Would you be kind enough to post a picture of the chamber area showing the extractors.

Very nice gun. It looks to have a large frame, is this correct. Is that recoil pad one of the sporting clays types with the hard plastic insert at the top.

It is!. Later I might put a real red recoil pad on.

Thanks it is a lovely looking rifle.

And it has the top strap over comb.

Forend lever release like my 500/450 31/4".

Look forward to results from shooting.

Cheers, Chris

Nothing wrong with a Sporting Clays recoil pad. That hard insert allows the but to slide into position without catching on your clothing. I use them on all my shotguns and rifles for that reason. I find that Pachmayer makes a very good pad. Even if you are throwing the gun forward and up and bringing it back into the shoulder they can still snag especially if you have straps from a pack on top of your clothes. Those Sporting Clays type pads seem to help preventing this from happening.

Nice rifle Jens. Will we get to see it in action over here?

Curious, how successful was/is a chamber resleeve and exactly how is it done?

Hi Theo.

Like in most operationen if the re-sleeving is done good it will last forever.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caliber_conversion_sleeve

Re-sleeving if done on older rifles if the chamber is damaged and one wish to continue have a use of the rifle. Itīs doesnīt have to a different new caliber of the same bullet diameter. Overhere re-sleeving a chamber is done mostly on old doublerifles and breakaction(kipplauf) rifles. On repeting rifles a rebarrel might be easier. In my case the .450Nitro was made into e .458win in the 1970s might because the .450 Nitro express ammo was no longer made(presumeably).

There should be a law against non-full length rifle photos (well, there seems to be a law against everything else these days so why not?)

How is it possible to truly appreciate a rifle without a full length photo? Exactly, it just can't be done.

I hope it all goes well & you can reuse the original chambering without issues?
If perchance that it doesn't, would you then have to 'bore out' the damaged section & then resleeve that back into the 450 NE?

The Ser# on my Gibbs is B3929 There should also be a Webley # on the bottom rib near the chambers.

I expect the chambers were bored out, then sleeved. The sleeves were then chambered for .458 Win Mag.
A simple re-chamber should work just fine, if that is the case, as long as there is not a 'joint' at the end of the 'sleeve' than allows gasses to escape radially around the sleeve's abutment with the barrels. Perhaps I am seeing possible problems where none exist.

I have the gun. I will make a few pictures of the chamber end. I most say itīs a goooood loooking gun. It`s a gun by appearance that hasnīt seen much use. No cordite pittings and sharp square rifling , itīs on-face and tight. Well what do you get for Ģ4800(aprox $6000) these days..:LOL
