Merkel 140 Stock Removal
      #280553 - 08/04/16 11:23 AM

Have any of you had the stock off of your Merkel 140 Double rifle? I think I know what screws to remove, but not sure how to get the 2 screws out of the bottom plate. I ground down a screw driver to fit them, but they are so tight they won't budge. Are these installed with loctite? If so, how can I get them to turn? Also, what is the thru bolt, coming in from the rear of the stock, attached to? Does it also have to come out?

Thanks!

Great question!!!! I don't know, but I'd love to find out. I want to get in to the action and disable the rediculous auto-safety, and for that, I do believe the stock must come off, and those tight screws removed.

I have heard that some gunsmith use bech drill machine to open these screws. First they attach the action with vise to the bed so that screws are upper side. Then they tighten the correct sized screw driver to chuck, press it against the screws head and then, very carefully with hand, turn the chuck so that screw opens.

I've heard of using a drill press to make sure the driver tip doesn't slip, but if the blade on the driver bends, because it has to be so thin, I'm not sure that would help. Those Germans didn't mean for their guns to be worked on and cleaned, I guess. Mine needs neither, but I can't stand having a gun I cant take apart myself, if needed. Guess maybe I'm meant to be a bolt gun man. Anyone interested in a nice Merkel?

Gunsmith screw drivers blade should be high quality steel. I have used old finnish army tools and noticed that sharpening them is like doing the same work to good quality knife...

Since there are no side plates, you will need to remove the trigger bow screws, lift the bow out of the inletting, then remove the butt plate or recoil pad and remove the thru stock bolt. It probably has a hex head bolt that will come out with a socket with extension and rachet. Not sure it its SAE or metric. Having not had a merkel in my hands, I'm not sure if any other screws need removing, but carful examination of the rifle should reveal that. Any screw that appears to go into the wood should be removed.

The trigger screws and thru bolt have been removed, but the screws that have to come out after that are the screws underneath the receiver that attach the trigger plate. These are the ones that I need advice on removing.

If you donīt want to use the way which I soon described, the next alternative is try to warm those screws with heavy powered soldering iron. If it doesnīt help, the next way is a competent gun smith.

It looks like I will be sending it over to JJ Peradeau. He is going to open up the screw slots to fit a thicker screw driver, and install a silvers red recoil pad while he's at it.
