Looking for good quality guns

Ladies and gentlemen, I have been wanting to get a nice quality double shotgun for a long time. I got into them thru my father, and it has just grown from there. I have read of numerous makers such as Clabrough, Grant, Hollis, William Moore, etc. I would like some opinions on some makers that would be a good start to this. Not looking to spend an outrageous amount of money, but I would like something with a little class to it per say. Personally something in the 16 or 20 ga, and made before the 1920's

Your limitations such as class and small bore are going to make for an expensive gun.

Well I do not have a problem having one that needs work done to it. To be honest, I would rather buy one to re-store than a show room type. It does not need tons of engraving, but a simple style is fine with me. Would love to have a hammer gun, but can do a hammerless one if needed in the begininng

Thank you Wayne for that. What got me into that site is doublegunjournal, so I think that is what got me more into some of the older firearms

Lots of 16 gauge side by side shotguns are available from European makers in vintage form. Don't know about the US.

20's or 12's for the US & Canada - 16's not very popular here. Winchester barreled and chambered a few Model 12's in 16 bore & many Euro hunters living in Canada have Euro 16's in SXS 16's, drillings with 16's and 7mm or 8mm rifle barrel, or even 9.3's for the rifled barrel as well as over/under combination guns. A friend of mine has a 2 barrel gun (Merk or Kreig) with choked 16 bore smooth over a 7x65R. The lower rifle barrel is extremely accurate (1/2" for 3-shot groups @ 100 meters) & makes this a most useful rifle for hunting here - smooth for grouse and rifle for moose, deer, bear or elk.

Well a 16 is my favorite bore. Always has been, as to me it is the most useful. In fact it hopefully will not be much longer til I have szihn do me a 16 bore muzzle loader.

Have a look on the 16 gauge society web site there are always 16s for sale there both top quality and others and all the load data you will ever need.

You have to be careful with older European 16 gauges, since many of them were 16/65mm, which translates into 2.5". 16 gauge ammunition is getting increasingly difficult to come by in this country, and 2.5" 16 gauge ammunition is a special order item.

The HUSKY 16 bore I had ran 2 5/8" for the chambers. Thus, new Federals were 1/8" too long once fired. They actually shot well - however, if they'd have been 1/4" to long, I'd not have used them.

The Brass I bought from Buffalo Arms, was 2.4" - they fit just fine & shot well with paper wads, shot and BP.

In my MOST HUMBLE opinion (that's a joke, btw nothing humble about it, most of the time) the 16 bore rifle is perfectly balanced for NA large game shooting - all of it, with round ball. Ed Rayle makes his 16 Bore barrels at .670" (bore dimension) so the standard .662" Lyman mould is the right size.
.670" is 1/2 way between the 16 and 15 bore sizes.
