I've got wombats!
      #278986 - 09/03/16 03:04 AM

Wikipedia image of the Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat

Driving late last night to change irrigation taps saw a big blackish thing running along the ground. Thought it might be a large cat. It ran and jumped down into a rabbit hole. The rabbit burrow looked larger. Might it be a wombat???

Drove past the same place this night from the opposite direction and cut the wombat off from its burrow. It ran for a good 100 metres before it disappeared somewhere.

Never had wombats anywhere near here before. Perhaps found a wombat hole in the ranges when I was a teenager many kilometres away.

Well now I have them on my farm. Lots of biodiversity on my vineyards - parrots and native birds; echidnas; snakes and lizards; resident grey roos and euros; possums; have seen an emu; ducks in season when the creek flows; several species of owl, one species in particular; crows of course; magpies; all sorts of birds; wedge tail eagles fly over. Used to have a resident nest where hawks bred before a stupid neighbour shot them all ... Feral game such as rabbits, hares and foxes. Never seem feral deer, but have had one turn up IN my fenced deer paddocks and seen tracks. Rare though.

The yabbies have been gone for decades. The river has to flow for more than a few days or weeks per year (and then that if we are lucky) for them to be here.

No fish, NO WATER! But have had trout turn up in debris when the river has flooded. Someone obviously seeded a stream or dam somewhere.

More on wombats here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_hairy-nosed_wombat

Can't hunt them as they are protected. I believe destruction permits might be possible if they become a nuisance, but they aren't for me, and probably hard to get. Aboriginals used to hunt and eat them. Colonists used to as well. I know some "hillbillies" who said they make good "wombat tail soup"/

You will learn to hate them.

They wreck fences, and one wombat will make a dozen burrows...... Burrows big enough to bog a Landcruiser or break an axle if you hit it at speed.

I asked one of the local Parks and Wildlife blokes if there was a good way to discourage them.
He answered, ".243".

The spread into grazing country seems to be a result of Landcare tree plantings.

What Cooch said. Also they have been/are responsible for a few road fatalities and a lot more wrecked vehicles. Hit one at speed and the car/4x4 will normal spear off the road.

The wombat - it eats roots and leaves. ( Aussie joke)

They can cause serious damage, particularly to buildings if they start burrowing under them.

References that I've seen equate them to rather coarse pork.

I might have to try some....... if I see some fresh ROADKILL, naturally.

I actually think we had one near the road several years ago as there was a huge hole/burrow into a bank. Thought a dog might have dug open the hole a bit. My GSP Siegfried was very interested in that hole. Might have heard from someone a wombat was killed on the road nearby, but have forgotten mostly. I never saw it.

I'm not worried about damage. They won't get out of control.

Yeah right,I see the new label

WOMBAT WINE ha ha.

Most of the urban masses wouldnt realise it was made from grapes and not wombat piss.

Btw,there are some `bat holes here that you would swear were made by a backhoe!

Ha ha I will send you a bottle of wombat wine.

We've had this property since 1888. I like the fact we still have gum trees from before that time here, and lots of trees, plus wildlife, birdlife etc. Life is more about more than investment monoculture 'sterile' vine plantations, endless vines covering the land to the horizon with hardly even a tree anywhere. That often out compete us traditional family based growers ...

Right now it is raining. And I hope my berries are not splitting or mildewing or getting botrytis ... I need a good crop to be picked this year to make up for previous years.

Does not matter what you are driving if one of your wheels hits the thing, especially a front wheel. Decent sized 4x4 are better as they give you more chance of putting them under the vehicle rather than the wheel. Cars or low 4x4 tend to have the front wheels lifted of the road when they hit one. Rarely do both wheels hit the road at the same time.

The missus hit one years ago coming home from work. Lucky she was driving the Mini Moke. Just spun off onto the side of the road. Took a couple of goes to kick the engine back into life-fuel thrown out of carby. Local coppers were coming past and made sure she was ok. They filed an accident report citing a Mr. Wallace Wombat as the cause and told her if they found him they would charge him with leaving the scene of an accident.

He was dead in the drain on the other side of the road.

I cant say I`ve ever had a problem with hitting one, maybe the old cart spring 'lux' is the go if you do smack one.Its won each and every round so far.

We have wombats laid on here and at the old place we had a permit to knock...serious wombat holes all over.

Here`s one a bit flat getting inspected by another pest of sorts.Taken up the back of the house paddock.

Ha ha, I used a couple of lines there that used to guarantee a rise from the MIS (Managed Investement Scheme) lobbyists, getting them to loose their cool and not look very good.

mmmmm I can see what people are saying ... two burrow holes .... and already six diggings. Shallow dug burrow holes. How many in a year? Will have to have a look around and see if there are other holes anywhere. When vintage settles down or I feel like a walk and search.

I have seen many wombats and being aggressively growled at at close range, but no attack!

One of the biggest I have ever seen was late one night driving home from Sydney International AP along Hermitage Rd near Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley (NSW).

In a rental car early hours and saw a huge roo beside the road and about five feet from him a monster wombat!

Right alongside "Wombat Crossing" vineyard No kidding.

Those things are like mobile rocks.

They adore sandstone country. The devastation they can wreak, undermining fences, foundations etc. has to be seen to be believed.

Hope he doesn't brings his friends to the vineyard party John

BTW not sure if the ones here are Hairy nosed or Common.

Will have to shine a spotlight in their face and see.

My memory is they shuffle off or run if a spotlight is shined on them.

They have a hell of a solid butt lol. There is a cartilageous plate there. When they get chased by a dingo they run face first into the burrow and if the dingo is persistent and tries to crawl around them they have been known to kill the dingo by crushing it against the roof of the burrow.

The plate is there so when they go in the burrows the predator can scratch at their bums and not worry them.

Koalas have it too, but for sitting in trees
