Detached Retina
      #278406 - 24/02/16 11:46 PM

About three weeks ago I had a detached retina in my left eye. I went in to surgery and ophthalmologist used a silicon oil to replace the vitreous and hold the retina in place, it was a large detachment. My question is, if any of you are ophthalmologists or have had a similar experience, after a year can I go back to shooting my 375 H&H magnum? (weight 10 lbs, recoil 35 ft-lbs)

Both my eyes had detached retinas on a 12 month period and required laser surgery( once on the left and twice on the right) to reattach them. The surgeon told me that it could take a few years to adjust to my "new" eyes.
I was right eyed and that eye did not work well enough to use open sights or a scope with cross hairs, but i found that I could shoot my m92 .357 just fine left handed with a peep sight. This led me to buy an 1886 .45-90 and an 1895 .405 and shoot them left hannded. I also switched to left handed with my Parker doubles.
So it went, slower but still accurate for a few years. The on a bison hunt, I had muffed a couple of shots with left eye using the barrel sight and when the bison took off running, muscle memory took over, I switched to right handed and dropped the critter at 50 yards. This was filmed and I watched that shot several times - I was back to shooting right handed with all guns!

My recommendation is to wait until the surgeon tells you it OK to shoot the big bores and get back to it!

If its an ongoing problem a slight adjustment in calibre down a few numbers might be in order.
We are only blessed with a pair of precious eyes and we need to look after them.

Thank you for all your kind responses. I am lucky to have my eyesight in my left eye. The vision is blurry but that appears to be due t to index of refraction of the silicon oil. Couple of friends have told me to wait at least a year before I go back to shooting. ophthalmologist is very antigun so it will be interesting to see what he says!

Again thank you.
