Finally shot the 10g!

Hey guys. I posted this shotgun before. It's a 10 gauge Cawles & Dunn, and a friend thinks has been restocked at some point with an australian timber. I don't know wood so take his word for it.

Anyways! I bought it 3 or so years ago, listed online as a 12g with 2 1/2" chamber. I thought it would be fun to have a single barrel under lever hammer shotgun, so bought it thinking i could get it lengthened to 2 3/4". It also was sold as not working (firing pin issue).

So it arrives, take it to the smith who makes a new firing pin and i asked him to ream to 2 3/4".

Go back to pick it up, he said he didnt ream it. I asked why not? He said "because it's a 10 gauge". Well, i never looked at the stamps on it lol. Apparently neither did the gun shop that sold it. 12g 2 1/2" was actually 10g 2 7/8".

So that was pretty neat, but a problem as 10g isn't easy to find here. I didn't do much with it, but eventually someone i was talking to said they were ordering some cases for theirs and did i want to go in on it? Sure! So i got 100 plastic cases. Made up some gear to reload. Then it took me forever to find black powder.. Eventually got it, and a 20mm punch.

I don't know what the load of BP is, but its the same volume as 1 1/2oz of No4 shot.

Goes: Primer - powder - card - cork (6mm each) - cork - cork - card - shot - card. Then glue that in. Fills it to the top of the case nicely.

Well anyways! Yesterday i finally took it out! First time ive ever loaded or shot black powder (in my own guns). Only had 7 rounds but fired them all. What a blast! Failing to find any Indian Mynas i resorted to shooting a paint can i had in the car.

There was nothing withing 1.5km of any direction i was shooting, so hence the different angles in the pictures (deliberately different for getting stills from the video for the pics!). Managed to hit it 5/7 so i was happy enough. Oh! And nicked it on the first go! Yay!

Nice photos Ash.
BP is a hoot to shoot! I like using it in the dove fields, keeps the boys with their plastic stocked auto loaders away!

Some great photos there Ash. Now you are educated in the black art you'll have to have a go at loading some 400Eley.

I'm not much of a shotgunner, but a BP hammer gun would really be something afield.

Good stuff. Funny when one buys something and it turns out to be completely something else.

Graeme Forbes of Forbes Wholesaling in Melbourne sells BP. I had to visit him personally to buy another 5 kg as SA has stupid explosives transport laws and close to impossible to get locally here. We even have a gunshop specialising in BP stuff ... but they had said to me, all future deliveries were already pre-sold ...

I suspect its the wad flying in the first pic? looking like a rifle grenade

Lancaster - Pic 1 is a can of spray paint just on impact - I didn't couldn't find any introduced pest birds but had to give it a whirl! Pic 3 is the can again. I do have some other photos with wads visible.

I'd love to take it for Magpie geese if it were legal. Maybe I'll have to bring it to the US with me for goose season?


Everyone else - thanks for the comments. Gotta love the smell of black powder!

When I got home my little brother was there and I was like "hey stick your finger in the barrel and twist". So he did, came out blacker than black bwhahaha!

Good to see it up and running.
1 1/2oz is a very heavy load for an old single 10; not bucking too much?
Cape Barren Geese have been known to bow to the mightiness of a 10g Damascus-hammer single belching BP... looking at getting another group together for a trip to Flinders Is. in Jan 2017 if you're keen...

Heya Cadet!

Can hardly feel recoil on it? May need more powder! I dunno what the load is. I just followed the advice of a 'smith friend.

I'd love to..But am saving to move to the US of A to be with Skye

my Eley 1902 catalog gives a load of 4 drams powder and 1 1/2 ounce (675 grains)shot for the 10 ga 2 7/8

lancaster, I thought the earlier loads were for 1 1/4oz. shot in a 10 bore? Quite possibly 1 1/4oz. might be incorrect data.

I don't know what you have available in Australia but if you can get your hands on some Red dot It works well in vintage 10ga's. I use once fired Remington hulls and a Remmington wad along with 19grs red dot a win 209 primer and 1 1/8oz shot. Mild but effective and it works just fine in all six of my vintage 10s. Only wish it would work in my 8ga's.

W.W. Greener in "The Gun and its Development" states that 10 bore loads were from 1 1/4 - 1 3/4 oz (preferably 1 1/2 oz +) wth 3 3/4 - 5 3/4 drams powder. Probably Curtis & Harveys No.6, stronger than todays?

Didn't realize old 10 gauge loads were as light as they are-very different from the modern 3 1/2" magnum goose/turkey load we know today. I have a H&R 10 gauge with 36" barrel, does its job very well on geese, but the 3 3/4 dram ,1 1/4 ounce shot load mentioned above for 10 gauge is very similar to a current pheasant load offered by Federal-in 12 gauge.

Single barrel Hammer guns with Jones under levers are pretty scarce. Nice find.

Square loads shoot really well, normally. That is the reason for lighter than modern (magnum) loads, for all gauges.

Some guys try to make modern magnums out of their 20, 16 and 12 bore black powder shotguns or smoothbores, but it is usually a mistake.

I see shot loads as high as 1 5/8oz in 20's and 2 1/2 ounce in 12's.

The shot string ends up being 30' long at 40 yards with no pattern density due to huge holes - a crippler only - like trying to shoot ducks with a 3" modern .410 at 30yards.

Daryl is correct about "square" loads.
My own loads, both black and smokeless are as follows:

12 gauge:
Target - 3/4 &7/8 ounce
Hunting - 1 & 1 1/8 ounce

10 gauge:
Target - 1 ounce
Hunting - 1 1/8 & 1 1/4 ounce

The above are lead, bismuth or Nice Shot loaded to 1100-1200 fps.
When I use steel shot in my modern pump I still use relatively light shot charges but they are loaded to higher velocities.

One ounce out of a 10 gauge...Might have to try that. Considering my gun weighs in the neighborhood of 12 pounds I'd imagine recoil would be about like a 3" .410. Fun!

The one ounce loads are very light on recoil and smash clays and doves at extended range.
Swatting things out of the sky like a large tennis racket.

My late friend Will, used 2 ounces 7 1/2's from a 6 (5) bore Westley Richards SXS. Very heavy gun with huge breeches and 36" tubes. It had a block with a silver line for sighting with ball, I assume.

Will had it re-furbished by H&H back in the 70's and they reamed the tube to 5 bore, for a smooth finish. It really shot well and used to powder the birds if you could get it swinging fast enough to catch up then slap the trigger when the bead 'just' passed the bird. Catch up it did and you could not stop and shoot behind the bird if you tried deliberately. It had automatic lead, built-in- about 14 pounds IIRC.

Both of my 8ga's are that way. Once you get them moving. One weights 14.5 and the other is 16.5 lbs.
