I couldn't open that John. Oops can now.

It is a cracker of a rifle and I would love to see it in the flesh.

Sold last Saturday night for USD250,000 The highest SCI rifle price achieved to date (not talking resale here).

Cheers,

Chris

Yes, included in the donation lot at the SCI auction was our Aussie mate and artist David Southgate, and his "Jim Corbett" painting.

From the Rigby Press release:

Rigby further adds to its $150,000 SCI auction Lot by including original painting by David Southgate

John Rigby & Co., has announced the addition of an original oil painting by artist David Southgate to its World Heritage Rifle Series donation for the annual Safari Club International (SCI) auction in Las Vegas on Saturday 6 February 2016.

Entitled “Last Moments of the Champawat Maneater”, the painting depicts legendary hunter Jim Corbett dispatching a man-eating tigress, which had claimed 400 lives in India. It was as a mark of gratitude for this deed that he was presented with a .275 Rigby that went on to feature so prominently in his future exploits and memoirs, and which will be on display at the SCI Convention.

With a guide price of $150,000, Rigby’s highly coveted Lot now includes four items in total – the painting, a Rigby London Best bolt action rifle in .275, specially built as a tribute to Corbett, a limited edition, leather bound set of Corbett’s best-selling writings, and a specially commissioned display credenza.

Mr Southgate approached Rigby to discuss donating his painting after reading about Rigby’s donation in SCI’s Safari Magazine. Rigby bought the painting and Mr Southgate will donate the purchase money to tiger conservation projects at the Jim Corbett National Park in India.

Marc Newton, Managing Director of John Rigby & Co, commented: “It is an honour to have someone with David’s knowledge and passion give his support to this project. The painting is a perfect fit with the rifle and we’re delighted that SCI’s conservation work and the Jim Corbett National Park will benefit from this generous gesture.”

David Southgate added: “I first became enthralled with Corbett’s hunting tales at the age of 13 and have re-read them repeatedly since then. The opportunity to contribute to the Lot celebrating one of my childhood hereos and to raise funds for conservation in an Indian National Park, named after him, was too good to pass up.”

Thanks for sharing. Looks like a Mauser M98 rifle can now be ordered duplicating a 1900s Rigby with Rigby name.

For a price. A number of vintage styled rifles have been made on bespoke order by the custom workshop.

Great video. I love the old footage at the beginning and also the Rigby gunsmiths - good to see younger people engaged in the craft and having great respect for the past. Corbett himself was in a class of one as far as I'm concerned.

Film has been made with very nice style but I have to say I do not like such a sculptural engravings.

That was my feeling on seeing it as well. Over adorned (IMO) which takes away from the pure essence of the very fine rifle.

Agree with these sentiments too, but it is what it is, a commemorative rifle.
The selling price proves the idea was sound...!

To be honest, I was chuckling quietly to myself when the guy with the callipers was measuring the nocksform of the "old versus new" rifles, as they were obviously so different....
At that point I still thought they were duplicating the exact pattern of the original!

Nice ! I think Mr Corbett was in big trouble in that painting, all ready to shoot & hasn't cocked his hammers !

The first thing that struck me was that the original had a trademark Rigby "Tiger Stipped" stock. It seem that Rigby's were rather fond of using tiger striped walnut so the new rifle should have had the same type of walnut. I recall discussing this with Ron Warton in his workshop when he was helping me find the parts to restore my Mannlicher Mdl 1903. It was Ron who found and obtained the new in the white Steyr barrel in 6.5x54 for me.

I also think it would have been better with more traditional light scroll engraving with a sliver nickel ovel inlet into the buttstock as the original.......................... but of course that would not appeal to the modern brash collectors.

The workmanship was fine of course but not in the spirit of the original at all.

I was chuckling to myself that they took the rifle out with the white glove treatment and then take a steel caliper to it.
At gun shows, the occasion to take some measurements off of some nice rifles arises and it is always with plastic vernier calipers which give accurate enough measurements for this type of thing.

Great rifle though and as a "tribute" gun I don't think the intent was to make a direct copy. It sure raised a lot of money though which definitely WAS the intent so, a job damn well done to Rigby!
