Why only one sling eye on Pedersoli Gibbs rifles?
      #277297 - 29/01/16 03:20 PM

I have been looking at Pedersoli's Gibbs series and they all have a single eye for attaching a sling. It is located immediately in front of the trigger guard. What kind of a sling did Gibbs use on these rifles and guns in the 1860's and how was it attached to the firearm?
Thanks in advance for explanations

I don't know exactly what type of sling the originals had, but I think the Pedersolis could have a sling with a standard style loop on one end and a strand tie style on the barrel end.
I guess that could be useful if a sling is allowed in the back position as you could slide the sling down the barrel if needed. Good question though. I have wondered the same since the match rifles have the swivel in front of the trigger guard but the African Hunter has the eyelet but not the swivel.

Military rifles had a sling in front of the trigger guard - normal and the Gibbs was a military-slanted accuracy rifle. I have seen pictures of a military charactature hold the rifle in 'standing' position.

The sling was choked up tight in the left fist to aid in aiming. They were attached as well to the sling swivel at the toe of the stock and when slung o the shoulder, pointed down. A long barrel might hit the ground, of course.

I've never felt that type of hold to work to my advantage. I preferred a sling further down the forend, when using a glove and hand stop.

Here is one idea how to use sling with Gibbs:

I would like to replicate that finish on my Pedersoli.
Those ML match rifles really get my heart beating!

Sorry, I realize I've come to this a little late, but I suspect the Gibbs is intended to use a short, 'single loop' belt set-up that hangings from the trigger guard swivel. I imagine the shooter would adjust the belt so that when prone, with his left forearm placed through the loop and holding the fore end, he is able to exert tension on the belt (and thereby increase his shooting stability) by pulling the butt stock back into his shoulder with his trigger hand.
