.275 Rigby
      #276944 - 22/01/16 11:38 AM

Hello all, this is my first post, before purchasing my rifle I did read a lot of posts by others here and found them very informative , so thank you to those who post on this forum. I've recently purchased a .275 Rigby take down made in 1924 and sighted for the 140 load. Just looking for advice from others with experience finding a load with similar ballistics to the original loading . I know Hornady make a load for the .275 , this maybe hard to get in Australia . I was wondering do any of the 7x57 factory loads duplicate the original or has anyone had success with hand loading ? I want to purchase some factory loads are there any brands others have found that are more accurate than other brands to try out ? I only have open sights & wont be altering the rifle to take a scope .I intend using my rifle for hunting and writing about it for this forum and the ADA .
Thanks

I think the Hornady Light Mag load for the 7x57 will work and you should be able to source them in Australia. You could also use the Norma and RWS loaded rounds. As your local suppliers if they would order you some. This is what I do here in Perth. Some will, some won't. I give my business to those that do.

Thanks Rich, my dealer is checking out the availability of the Hornady .275 , apparently there's two distributors now . If that fails I'll ask them about the Light Mag load 7x57 . I'll look at the Norma & RWS as well, I didn't think of those two . I'm also chasing an original pack of the Kynoch 7mm with the Rigby label , just for collecting .
Cheers

If you get into reloading Woodleigh make bullets specifically for the 275Rigby, might be worth looking if you want to duplicate original loadings.

Thanks Rule 303, I already reload for my other rifles. I've looked at the Woodleigh catalogue which projectile is specifically made for the .275 Rigby ?
Cheers

PMC loaded cartridges still turn up for sale occasionally.
I have seen it advertised in a couple of provincial Qld gunshops, and one shop locally in Darwin, over the last 12 months.
Can't vouch for the loaded rounds, but have never been able to fault PMC brass, having reloaded thousands in several different calibres.

...talking about Korean brass here (Poongsan Metal Corporation IIRC), lord only knows where its made in today's cryptic global manufacturing environment!

Thanks Marrakai for the info. I've had mixed results with PMC loaded ammo , I haven't seen PMC on the shelf for years . The previous owner told me he fired a box of PMC through this rifle 15yrs ago and the grouping wasn't that good . My own experience with a friends 270 win, was similar , it grouped 4" @100 with PMC , we then tried some of my reloads , it grouped about 2"@100 and with Remington factory it was the same 2"groups . Another mate who had a station would buy 243win PMC in case lots for feral animal control and swore by it .
Cheers

I shoot Winchester 145 gr ammunition in my Rigby and it shoots to the 100yd leaf sight. The two local gunshops here have plenty of it so someone else must use it too. It is sold as 7mm Mauser. I have no interest in reloading so it suits me fine.

Thanks Claydog , I'm sure I saw the Winchester on the shelf at the gun store , so I'll grab a box when I'm next in there. My Rigby has 100,300&400yd leaves with the "new Rigby peep" have you tried with the Winchester load at more than 100yd leaf ? 400yd might be testing my eyesight and how steady my rest is

I only tried it with the fixed sight to see where it shot. My rifle has factory claw mounts so I usually use it with the scope and even then very rarely over 100 yds. Out of interest I shot a bull buffalo the other day with that winchester ammo and as I was keeping the skull and horns for a mate I heart shot it instead of the usual head shot. It probably took 6 steps and piled up. Of course I wouldn't recommend it for buffalo but put it in the right place and there you go.

My bad they list it as 275H&H, could of sworn in the old catalogues it was listed as 275Rigby, maybe just me being dylesitc.

Thanks Claydog , when I get the license through for my rifle I'll try a few different brands with the open sights before I try reloads . Re the buff with the .275 , it's where you hit them that counts as you've shown.

Rule303 , I saw the same in the Woodleigh catalogue , I did read on another forum of a guy using the H&H spec projies in his Rigby until it was brought to his attention that it is for a different rifle .

Some pics of the Rigby for you guys, made in 1924 as a "Best HV" with "New Peep" and flat lever. All the numbers match on the receiver, bolt and barrel.

I picked up my Rigby yesterday , only 4 weeks from application date to issuing the license ,the God of Rigby must have been shining down on me 😄
I could only get the Winchester 145's so over the weekend if this wind disappears I'll squeeze off the first few rounds . I say few rounds , it's been a long time since I bought factory ammo , I reload all bar shotgun cartridges, $185 for 60 rounds 7mm Mauser, I'm guessing the price reflects the popularity or lack of it here , but I shouldn't grizzle too much at least it was on the shelf ....I've rubbed the lattern of the Ammo Genie and she's granted me three wishes , a set of dies, some powder and box of Woodleigh projectiles 😄
Thanks to all who contributed.

Nice rifle in a classy calibre. I'm currently handloading 162 gr projectiles in mine and once those are exhausted I'll switch to 175 gr woodleighs. Again, congratulations on a nice rifle.

Thanks , the barrel is 22" original length, has v sights 100,300,400 yds, the flat lever is original , I'm not sure how common that was in the day.
Weight 6lb 10 oz .

Thanks GWH, I've ordered the 140's as that's the weight mine is sighted for, I was reading if I want to use heavier projectiles I can use the adjusting screw on the front sight adjusting it lower . Would you know if this is the case ? Also have you adjusted the rear sight by drifting for windage ? If so what soft metal did you use for the drift , I was thinking of copper so as to not mark the steel .
Cheers.

Bwana, I run 140 Woodleighs in my 1908 7x57 custom, 47gn 2209 @2750. Works well on Sambar.
Cheers.

Thanks Metal ,that will give me something to work up to .
So I went to the range today and squeezed of a few factory rounds. The trigger is a crisp 5kg plus ....might need adjusting . So I started at 50yds and used the 100yd V and put the ball low , almost level in the bottom, with the target aim point above this. At 50 yds aiming at a 50mm dot I shot two groups of two shots touching either side of the dot . When I shifted to 100yds , I was struggling to get a clear sight picture and the groups were 4", I'm leaning towards thinking it is me as opposed to the rifle. The white lines on the rear V's and the White dot on fore sight the are missing . The groove is there for the lines, I'm guessing this may have been Ivory and over time it's come off ? My experience with this type of open sight is very limited. Can anyone suggest where I might find a description of these sights and how to use them, ie position of the ball in the V and adjusting the fore sight . Are there better targets than others for sighting open sights on ?
It was a fun afternoon .
Thanks

Bwana, nice rifle.
The bolt handle is a mystery, probably altered, in any event non typical Rigby......and certainly not typical Commercial Mauser from wence this Rifle came.
Dont worry about the 275 Rigby cartridge, just hand for 7x57 Mauser and all will be revealed.
Good Shooting

Hi Paradox, I was just in for a cup of tea & saw your reply, I planned on loading to the 7x57 specs and working up a load.
The bolt handle is the original , Marc Newton from Rigby very kindly supplied me with the info on the rifle and their records show the bolt as a "Flat lever " , I presume as this was a Best rifle , the customer would have ordered it that way .
I have worked out how to regulate the sights , I ordered a reproduction catalogue and it describes how to regulate the rifle with adjusting the front sight.
Regards
BJ

Hello BJ

Very interesting. OK, if the catalogue doesnt come through, let know pretty sure I have one here somewhere.
There are not many finer bolt rifles than these vintage Mauser/Rigbys.
Good luck with the regulation.

Best
