SEARCH IS OVER - I've found a Vintage 404 Jeffery

brought over from "classified"

Helmut,
This is not exactly what you had in mind, but Oh, my! http://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=5766654
It is a .404 built on a ZG47 action, which many, including me, think is the highest development of the Mauser design.

Hello xausa,

It looks like my search is over. I think you will appreciate this one.

I've located a Vintage Cogswell & Harrison in 404 Jeffery. I found an identical rifle posted on the Africahunting Forun that was said to be a Rhodesian Game Department rifle. Its serial number is 3000 higher than this one. With the serial number being so close, I'm thinking this one might also have been used by the Wardens.

One question that I would have is: Since the bottom metal is aluminum on both rifles, what would the date be when Cogswell & Harrison built these guns?

I'm guessing they were built in the 1950's, but have no hard evidence other than I don't think Aluminum was used for bottom metal before then. Does anyone know for sure, or have an opinion?

Here are some pics of the rifle:

Congratulations, did you purchase this from Westley Richards?

This of course is a modified P-14/17 rifle with teh hole under the military rear sight filled by the oval hole being machined round and a plug fitted. BSA did the same to their Model A through E sporting rifles that they built between 1948-1953.

A very nice rifle indeed.

Hello.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm hoping someone can help me determine the production dat of this rifle based on the serial number 634xx.

Great looking rifle and equally good photography - lots of character there.

Hello Mckinney

Thanks for the reply.

I'm not sure how much time has to pass for "dings" to turn into "character". But this one now has a lot of charactrer.

Great looking rifle. Congratulations.

I like the action, and the fact it is a 404J!

Hello Rockdoc,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I like the action also. It doesn't have the sleek lines of a 98 Mauser, but still has the "look" of a Professional's rifle and is somewhat Vintasge being over 65 years old.

Hum, same age as me.
