D&D .240Wby. stalking rifle on Mauser Intermediate action
      #276396 - 11/01/16 05:29 AM

A few years ago I put my hands on a badly salvaged Original Mauser Intermediate action made at Oberndorf at the end of the thirties with all the bells and wishes, originally delivered as a 7x57 with double square bridges, solid left wall, bolt guide, etc...
Alas it has suffered from the ineptitude of previous “would be gunsmiths” and lost a portion of its rear flat top for a badly screwed long Warne base supporting a red dot sight, the bolt guide having been crudely grinded to ease an ill fitted modern side swing safety shroud and the bolt lever was botched and twisted.
At the same time my friend customer Jean Calians gave us an Original Mauser 7x64 to restore with new stocking an scope claw mounting, asking that we take off the complete side safety system he didn't liked (he said that it detracts the clean lines of the action rear end).
It took us much work to return that action at its past glory and while working on we machined it to fit the original Mauser side safety with its stalking latch. Indeed we had to modify some parts, but that rarely seen stalking safety that also blocks the bolt in place is now perfectly fitted.
We like the idea to retain the traditional wing safety to use on the unscoped rifle while the stalking side safety could be used with the scope fitted.
A new bit of steel taken from a broken military action was TIG soldered before being machined to form the bolt guide and we have fitted our own style bolt handle.
To repair the badly butchered rear square bridge we have opted to mill it for a specially machined 30mm H&H style scope mount that now supports a Zeiss 2,5-10x50 Victory HT scope.
Having full drawers of Mauser original parts, the rebuilding of the double set trigger was not a great trouble and we took the opportunity of lengthening the magazine to put a new straddle floorplate.
The action was barreled in .240 Wby. Mag. with a 25" Lothar Walther match grade barrel and a well seasoned blank of French walnut has been used to cut the classic stock.
The rifle ends in some kind of tribute to the great H&H stalking rifles of the (alas gone) best years...but in D&D guise!
We will appreciate your comments.

Regards to all.

Very nice work, I like especially that mauser type safety and british style scope mounts. But chosen caliber is little weird for me...maybe good for chamois long range hunting....?

Beautiful work!!.

Interestingly. Just sold my Weatherby MkV in .240wea and I have a intermediate Mauser laying aound which I rarely use and actually thought to have redone in .240Wea.

Lots of inspiration here...:-)

Thanks for sharing....

Beautiful as per usual Joel and great close up photos of your work as you go along. I think it is fair to say that we are all very grateful of the detailed and super high quality photos that you take, which gives a lot of us great inspiration as well. Thanks Joel, simply superb.

Igor. The range and winds in the mountains are the reason why 6x62 Freres, 5,6x57, 240 wby, 257 wby, 6,5x68, 6,5-284 etc. are popular in the mountain regions of Europe...

Joël. Fantastic rifle, absolutely gobsmacking.

This Dorleac guy has the unique ability to take rifle make ups in which I would normally have zero interest and presenting it in a manner which I SO covet. The craftsmanship is of course impeccable but the design and execution of such a rifle, the type which others so typically create abominations (quite easy to imagine what the poor donor rifle was like) is true artistry. The stock work alone- the style, the lines, the details, the finish, is just....perfect. If 5 minutes prior to seeing this thread, someone had asked if I could ever see owning a .240 WBY, I would have snorted, laughed aloud and then probably cussed. Now, I know there is one that I would not only own but greatly covet.
One of the best looking modern scoped rifles I've seen. And when I say one of, I mean less than probably five. Ever.

True perfection. Congratulations to D&D for their role in keeping the classic British sporting rifle
alive and better than ever. The aesthetic qualities of the rifle are matched by the superlative attention to detail. Bravo et merci.

That is one of the sexiest rifles I have laid eyes on. In response to you mentioning it having two safeties, if I read it right, how does that work? What work is required to allow for that? I do like the original wing safeties on mausers very much, but when a scope is wanted I have always had to go a different route. I would love to hear the description of how you go about that, as I may have to do that on one of my next mausers down the road

Thanks you for your kind words.
The second side safety is an original Mauser mechanism, not one of our own systems.
If you look carefully at the third picture you will notice that when the safety is pulled to the rear it will block the sear and bolt movement.
The trouble isn't in making the safety itself but in the machining of the rear portion of the receiver.
Notice also that the safety benefits from some sort of stalking button that must be depressed in order to slide it in forward position: safety off.

Some pictures of the same safety mechanism photographed on an original commercial Mauser rifle.
They speak by themselves.

Thanks Joel for posting detailed photos of the side safety, very interesting.

Have you ever posted photos of any Mannlicher-Schoenauer rifles that you have built yourself.

Currently we are working on a very special project, a big bore based on a magnum Mannlicher-Schönauer action.
The rifle will belong to a forum member and even if we have well evolved, it remains a headache to comply with our standards!
Hope to be able to post pictures in the nearest future
