Buying firearms at auction in Britain and importing into Aus
      #274755 - 08/12/15 04:48 PM

The subject of buying firearms at auction in Britain and importing them into Australia has yet again come up.

Enquiries of Holt's have garnered no response therefore I seek the collective experience of the forum members.

If I buy a firearm at a British auction what is involved in importing it into Australia ??

Do either of these Auction houses provide this service ???

What are British Police requirements??, British Customs requirements ??? shipping company (airlines), Australian Customs requirements, Australian Police (Queensland) requirements.

Are there British or Australian agents that provide such a service ??

Is there lurking among us a connection with Holts or Bonhams that will respond to enquiries regarding condition of guns and whether this service is provided by them ???

Haven't done it for 10 years, and when I did, it was a little different since I lived there and my license got me an exemption on the export permit, as I was exporting licensed firearms, but basically:

I've never bought at auction, but I presume the auction house is also a RFD (Registered Firearms Dealer), in which case they can ship to another RFD (Which the exporters will be) or could hand it over to the purchaser if he had a suitable "slot" on his license. (The system works differently over there in that you can be authorised to purchase and then go looking for a gun!)

You or the exporter can apply to the DTi (Dept Trade & Industry) for an export license - used to be free, don't know if that's still the case.

Exporter ships it to Aus via an airline that will carry firearms (Not all will, especially unaccompanied)

Meantime, in Aus, have your local police force issue a B709 - now needs to be done before the rifle arrives.

Customs "seize" it upon arrival and take it away for testing of safety, trigger pull, etc.

Once they're done, and upon presentation of a still valid B709, they will release the rifle to you.

This is where States differ - in WA, I'd have to get a temporary permit to transport the rifle to a dealer for licensing, OR the dealer would collect from customs on my behalf. Don't know about QLD.

If you need the name of a shipping company in the UK that I used, shoot me a PM. As I said though, it was 10 years ago, and it wasn't a cheap exercise then...and that was without them having to do the export license application, as I didn't need one.

Gents,

I thank you for the information.

More homework to do on this.

I knew it was possible - but potentially problematic - but so is life.

Will follow up and keep an eye on the auctions.
