500 cal project
      #275751 - 29/12/15 02:33 PM

HI all,

I'm currently gathering the bits for another custom build. The plan is to build something predominantly for Big game Rifle Club competition over here, meeting Group 3 specs (Which is >.485" and 5,300ft/lb of energy, but which can also be used to hunt with should an opportunity arise (So won't be overly heavy or ornate).

I grabbed one of the Montana rifles being sold cheaply here recently, which are built on their 375H&H/458Lott length 1999 actions as opposed their larger PH action.

So, my current thinking is something like the 495 A-Square as it has enough power, is built for the 375 length actions and reportedly has no feed issues and is easier to modify feed ramp and action rails for, but I am wondering if something more standard like a 500Jeffery would fit (More width wise than length wise) without too many hours of extra metalwork on the action? Or any other ideas I might not have thought of?

Also, if I went with the A2, does anyone know a source of brass (Other than forming from one of the large Weatherby cases) or dies?

Thanks!

Regards, Jeff

Dies you can get from CH4d ,brass from Bertram stamped ''500 Weatherby'' [500 A Square],which is the easiest way out of it,and cheaper than 460 WBY brass which must be horrendous per 100 now !

Jeff - if going the .505 Barnes Supreme, there is already loading data out there for starters.
A fellow in Vancouver, B.C. made one up in the 70's and I got to shoot it. Wish I hadn't. 600gr. bullet at 2,600fps. That hurt. I think it used the full length .460 Weatherby case and was built on a .602 Brno action. I bought the unfired .375 barrel from the guy. No mention was made of any difficulty getting the action to feed.

Hi Jeff,

Get with Rolf Bachnick with Safari Arms. He knows how to convert your action so it will feed properly, and more importantly not eject the whole load out the magazine every time you open the bolt.

I chose the .495 A-Square for a rebore project of a Ruger RSM .458 Lott. Couldn't be happier with the results. I found dies at CH4D, brass from Superior Reloading and ordered a custom reamer from Pacific Tool. Not sure if any of this helps an Aussie.
The big Ruger is a good weight for the .495, and with a .416 Rigby magazine and follower, the conversion was fast and feeding is perfect.
My use is at .500 NE ballistics, 570 grains at 2,150 feet from the 23" barrel. The rifle is off being stocked now. Stocked for point and shoot with open sights. Finished weight target is 10 lbs
5 ozs. I'm planning another Africa trip for 2017, and having two good buffalo already, I want to cull 2 or 3 cape buffalo on a SA game farm. Maybe the outback next time.
If you choose the .495, you will love the feel of it in your hand.
